Firefox 2.0: Session Restore Tweak

Starting with Firefox 2.0, Session Restore allowed you to restore your Firefox session to exactly the way it was prior to the browser crashing. It can also be changed to work like Session Saver and Tab Mix Plus, in that when you reopen the browser it will be exactly the way it was when you closed it last. This use to be an about:config tweak, but has since been placed in the options menu.

To have Firefox to restart where you were when you last closed it:

  1. From Firefox Tools Menu select Options…
  2. From Main in the Startup section, When Firefox starts: select from the drop-down menu Show my windows and tabs from last time
  3. Click OK

Thanks a million … great advise. Just shows that you have to check new software all the way …

  3. Does this work as well as session saver when FF crashes? (For some reason, I manage to crash FF at least once a week [still better than the daily with IE] and I really depend on SS).

  4. cool, knew it was hidden somewhere πŸ˜›

  5. It has an included session saver, but since you can’t save a session, and it doesn’t have the ability to click “last” or some such, I routinely “loose” all sessions (probably once a month or so). I did it just today, when I updated Firefox, and it opened with that stupid “congratulations, you’ve updated’ screen, so I closed Firefox and reopened it — with all my sessions lost. Damn it’s frustrating! I wish Sessionsaver still worked….

  6. Loose: ‘Free from anything that binds or restrains; unfettered’
Lose: ‘To fail inadvertently to retain (something) in such a way that it cannot be immediately recovered’

  7. Is it possible to completely remove the ‘System Restore’ pop-up, whenever Firefox starts up? I usually have a Firefox window open at all times, and I usually just press the power button to turn off, so seeing the ‘System Restore – Firefox crashed pop-up’ everytime is sorta annoying. Any help would be much appreciated.

  8. @Max:
Yes, see the tips in the Improper Shutdown Bug post.

  9. Thanks for the quick response. It worked like a charm!

thanks, was just trying to help somebody with this and could not remember where to change this. with no drop down menu “button” you don’t know that it is there visually unless you click on it.

  12. Great. I went through all kinds of extensions and problems trying to get this function, yours was the first site (including firefoz’s site!!) that explained how easy it is. My gratitude!
