After dealing with a broken theme for the last couple days I decided it was time to make some changes. For one, I went back to a two-column theme, frankly three-column are just to much (and is if three weren’t bad enough WordPress.com offers a four-column theme). With the three-column the content was just too narrow. I think the display problems over the last couple days were tied to the Garland theme as well as some of the sidebar widgets.
For a while now I been wanting to make a custom header for my blog, something that I could also use on my FeedBurner headline animator widget. Problem was I didn’t have any decent ‘Photoshop’ type software and I sure as heck wasn’t going to shell out the money for it either. Once again CyberNet News came to the rescue. I had done a Google search for ‘opensource photoshop’ and came across a couple articles about GIMP. The articles weren’t very great and all they really did was complain that it was not Photoshop. But I thought I had recalled reading about GIMP a while back on CyberNet. A quick search there turned this article.
I mentioned earlier that the sidebar widgets may have been part of the problem. Some the malfunctioning widgets included the text widgets I had used for Site Translations, Upcoming Releases and Featured Posts. For Feature Posts (now Popular Posts) and Upcoming Releases (now Upcoming) those are now individual pages which can be accessed via the page listings in the header. I have removed site translations for now since I have not seen a demand for this feature.
Finally, big changes in the Categories list. Really got this cleaned up, removed/replaced several categories
- 2007 Predictions, reassigned to Something Different
- Arizona Cardinals, now AZ Sports Teams
- Mozilla Firefox: Extensions, now Mozilla Firefox: Add-Ons
- Mozilla Firefox: Themes, reassigned to Mozilla Firefox: Add-Ons
- Netscape reassigned to Internet and Browsers
- Phoenix Suns, now AZ Sports Teams
- Real Player and WinAmp, removed category.
This should be the last of the blog changes for a while. Even though these last couple days have had issues, still been very happy with WordPress.com for the past six months I’ve been using them. Of course anything had to be better than Blogger!
