Thunderbird 5 Features & Changes

With the upcoming release of Thunderbird 5 coming up soon (note: there is NOT going to be a Thunderbird 4 as Thunderbird numbering will now match that of Firefox) here a quick look at some of the features & changes (a link to the complete list is at the bottom of this post):

  • Supported Platforms:
    • Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 (32-bit only)
    • Mac: No more support for OSX 10.4 and non-Intel processors. New 64-Bit support
    • Linux: No changes from 3.1
  • Improvements to the new account Wizard – Improvements in the performance as well as the ability to easily choose to setup account as IMAP or POP if both are available.
  • Arching can be disabled
  • Auto compacting by default – new default threshold is now 20 MB
  • Attachment pane redesign – changes to how attachment sizes are displayed
  • Software updates – Like Firefox 4.0, to check for updates go to Help > About Thunderbird
  • New add-ons manager – Like Firefox 4.0 now opens as a new tab and themes tab has been relabeled as Appearance
  • Scam warning – Still incomplete, but can be turned off
