Clean up after Windows 10 Upgrade

As I mentioned before, the installation added $Windows.~BT  & $Windows.~WS folders plus a windows.old folder. Some of this is the installation media, some of it is a backup of your Windows 7/8.1 data. If you are certain everything is working fine and your data and apps have transferred over, you can free up some disk space (about 16 GB in my case) by removing these folders. This can be done via the Windows Disk Cleanup Tool which you will need to be logged in as an administrator to access the ‘Remove System Files’ feature. SuperSite for Windows provides detailed step-by-step directions on…

Firefox 41/Chrome 45 and Netflix

What do the upcoming Firefox 41 (Windows 64-Bit) and Chrome 45 have in common? Neither will support Microsoft Silverlight. However, Netflix will continue to work on Chrome 45, because Netflix on Chrome use HTML5, not Silverlight. The same can not be said for Firefox though, where Netflix still uses Silverlight. Up until Firefox 33 in October 2014, with the introduction of the Open H.264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems plugin Firefox did not support HTML5. But, Netflix (being a paid service) uses DRM which was not supported until Firefox 38 in May 2015 when Mozilla added the Primetime Content Decryption Module by Adobe…

WARNING: Fake Windows 10 Upgrade Email

Something I have learned over the years, Microsoft is never going to offer you something via email and if it looks fishy it is! So, now there is a ransomware email going around originating Thailand (with the address update@microsoft.com) claiming to be from Microsoft with a Windows 10 installer already attached (how handy!)  First red flag should be getting an unsolicited email from Microsoft, much less one WITH an attachment. Windows Insider Program participants will get emails from Microsoft, but those will not have attachments. Next, there is an encoding issue with the email (likely since it originated from Thailand) though overall…

First Look At Windows 10 — Part 2

One of the first things I wanted to check out was how Mozilla had worked around Microsoft disabling the default browser API. I downloaded and installed Firefox 40 Beta on the freshly upgraded Windows 10 machine and upon first run I was asked if I wanted to make Firefox my default browser (Chrome was currently default and then I had switched it to Edge later for testing purposes). Firefox detected it was NOT the default browser Once you click the Use Firefox as my default browser button the Windows 10 Settings > System > Default Apps screen opens which is a…

First Look At Windows 10 — Part 1

So after some trial and error along with one hang-up during the upgrade, I managed to get Windows 10 on the Dell Optiplex GX620 or as I call it The Guinea Pig. Now, unlike my two main systems: an HP Laptop running Windows 7 which I use for school and a Gateway Desktop running Windows 8.1, The Guinea Pig did not have the upgrade offer on the taskbar. I had not done much with this system as I had originally picked it up so I could have an end device on my Cisco Network Lab. Once I finished my CCNA certifications back in May everything went into storage, until…

Lightning on a fresh install of Thunderbird

The machine I upgraded to Windows 10 on Saturday did not have Thunderbird installed. I did a clean install of Thunderbird 38.1.0 with a clean profile. Upon first run I noticed Lightening was already there along with some options at the bottom: First run of a fresh install of Thunderbird 39.1.0 I like the way Mozilla has this setup that you can either keep or disable Lightning. This is what they should have done with Pocket in Firefox.

More Troubles for Nvidia

It has not been a good week for Nvidia Unfortunately, we could not get stock quote nvda this time.. Last weekend Windows 10 users with Nvidia video cards using dual displays were having issues with Nvidia’s management software and Windows Update fighting each other claiming they had an updated driver. The Nvidia update would work, but Windows Updated detected that driver as outdated and would install a driver that didn’t work correctly with Windows 10. Now comes news they are recalling their 8-inch Shield Tablets in the US due to fears the device overheats and the battery may catch fire. Nvidia…

Windows 10 CAN Retain Your Default Apps.

Note: I have yet to try this, so not sure where and when in the setup process this is presented. Still trying to get Windows 10 installed on one of my two test machines. Yesterday, one of them started acting up (BSOD) while I was researching how to do a forced upgrade to Windows 10. While BSOD use to be common with this system, they seemed to have disappeared when I did a clean install of Windows 7 about a year ago. The timing of that BSOD though makes me wonder if that machine was possessed by HAL 9000. So over the…
