Thunderbird 9.0.1 Released

Well, I didn’t see this coming, mainly because I use the Beta builds as my default Thunderbird build on my desktop machine. I do run the Release version of Thunderbird on my laptop, but since I am on break from school, have not even turned on the laptop this week. On December 23, 2011, Mozilla released an update for Thunderbird 9. Thunderbird 9.0.1, according to the (vague) release notes fixed an issue with Windows XP users not being able to run Thunderbird in some cases. Thunderbird 9 Released

Thunderbird 9 has been released on December 20th, 2011. Current Thunderbird 8.0.0 users can update via Help > About Thunderbird. Lightning users, after you have updated to Thunderbird 9.0, your calendars will be broken. To fix this go Tools > Add-ons and then in your add-ons list, at the top of the list click the gear button and select Check for Updates. Lightning will update to version 1.1 (other add-ons may be updated at this time as well) and once you restart Thunderbird, your calendars will be working again. Starting with Thunderbird 9.0 Beta 3 (released November 25, 2011) hardware acceleration is now turned off by default. While the premise was good to allow Thunderbird 5.0 and newer to utilize video hardware acceleration, for many user it caused issues including blurry fonts. Mozilla has completed the merge for Thunderbird 9 on the Beta release channel on November 16, 2011. Bug 701875 was created a few days ago to address a major issue with Windows and Gecko 2.0 (Firefox 4.0+/Thunderbird 5.0+). omni.jar is a core file for Gecko 2.0 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird. From MDN: Firefox 4 and Thunderbird 3.3 achieve performance improvements by moving many of their internal parts from being standalone files or sets of JAR files into just one JAR file called omni.jar; this reduces the amount of I/O needed to load the application. Thunderbird 9.0 Beta Delayed

In today’s Mozilla Weekly Update meeting it was announced Thunderbird 9.0 Beta is delayed, but is coming. While there is no official release date yet for Thunderbird 9.0 Beta, could be as early as today (November 15th). When we checked last night, we were already seeing Linux and Mac candidate builds, but so far nothing for Win32.
