Received an email today from the folks at Jetpack Social informing me as of April 30th (tomorrow) they will be removing the auto-share functionality to Twitter. First off, being Twitter is the dumpster fire it has been since the changes last year we nuked our Twitter account earlier this month. So losing this functionality is not really a disappointment. The reasons they sited is Twitter’s removing free access to their API and them unable to reach an agreement (which likely means Twitter never even attempt to negotiate with Jetpack Social). The auto-share functionality to Facebook, Tumblr and Linkedin will remain unchanged. The blogs posts are currently being auto-shared to the El Guru Tech Facebook page along with my Linkedin account.
Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead 🧵

The email also mentioned future possibility of having Jetpack Social auto-share on Instagram (which we don’t use) and Mastodon. The later we are using and currently have a separate plugin that is suppose to auto-share to our Mastodon feed. However, if Jetpack Social does add that functionality in the future, it means one less plugin to have to load and ensure remains updated. Again, the email does not come as much of a surprise (other than the short notice, but that is par for the course with Twitter since the leadership change).
