Starting later this month business Windows 7/8.1 users will be included in the Get Windows 10 campaign. They too will start getting the nagware to upgrade to Windows 1o. According to a blog post from Matt Barlow, Microsoft’s MSFT 454,46 +2,87 +0,64% general manager of business group marketing, “Small businesses and organizations will soon be able to receive notifications about the upgrade and then directly upgrade to Windows 10,”. Microsoft defines small businesses and organizations as those with a device which:
- Running and licensed for Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro
- Configured to receive updates directly from the Windows Update service (i.e. updates are not managed by WSUS or System Center Configuration Manager on those devices)
- Joined to an Active Directory domain
Those businesses running devices on Windows 7 or 8.1 Enterprise edition or which updates are managed through onsite tools or via WSUS or SCCM are still excluded from the free Windows 10 update and won’t be getting the above deceiving nagware screen.
A feature the above nagware screen fails to mention is it will Track your usage (regardless of your privacy settings). It also fails to mention users can opt-out. Yes, you can opt-out simply by clicking the X at the top right corner, but it will likely pop-up again sometime in the very near future. Hopefully Microsoft will not adopt the tactics of some website pop-ups where you close the ad and it pops right back up again.
