Firefox 3 RC3 Coming

Due to showstopper bug #436575 there will be a 3rd Release Candidate for Firefox 3. This bug which affects only Mac users causes Mozilla applications experience unkillable hangs after installing Mac OS X 10.5.3.  Apparently the underlying issue is on Apple’s side, but the Mozilla developers have come out with a work around/patch to fix this issue. Affected Mozilla applications include: Camino Firefox 2.0.0.14 Firefox 3 RC2 Songbird Thunderbird While there will be an RC3 for Windows and Linux builds as well, it is only a version bump, no actual updates will come with RC3. Only Mac builds will have…

Release Recap: June Week 1

Going to try something new here. Each Sunday I will do a quick recap of the prior week’s releases as well give an update on the status for upcoming releases. Besides Firefox and Thunderbird, I will also include addons.mozilla.org (AMO) as well. AMO (addons.mozilla.org) 3.4.3 – An updated version of AMO with improved search capabilities was suppose to be released on June 5th. However this has been pushed back to June 12th to address some performance issues with the search feature. Firefox 2.0.0.15 – Still (tentatively) scheduled for June 24th. There was suppose to be a code freeze this past…

Animated GIF’s & Profiles

It started simple enough, I was being asked on the CyberNet Forum why on my Tweaks Site I indicated the Pause/Restrict/Disable Animated GIFs tweak did NOT work with Firefox 3. The poster indicated it worked fine for them. I remember when I setup the tweak section I wrestled with this one as not all of the tweak worked with Firefox 3. Yes, you could press escape to stop the animated GIF. However the about:config tweak does not fully work with Firefox 3. The ‘once’ setting behaved the same as the ‘none’ setting. So, my decision was based on ‘all-or-nothing’, if…

Thunderbird takes 43rd of 100

Thunderbird has taken the honour of taking 43rd place in PC World’s: The 100 Best Products of 2008 Award. What I find a bit odd (besides being sandwiched between the Rock Band controllers and the Dell XPS 420) is there is a link to a PC World review in the list. The PC World review titled T-Bird E-Mail App a Winner is from January 27, 2005 and is a review of Thunderbird 1.0 (current released version is 2.0 and prior was 1.5). Oh well, as David Ascher put it, “I can’t wait to see where we land in 2009…“

Firefox 3 Takes 21st & Flock 6th

Firefox 3 has taken the honour of taking 21st place in PC World’s: The 100 Best Products of 2008 Award. Unlike Thunderbird, the review for Firefox 3 is a little more current, even if it is for Beta 1 (release November 2007). On an interesting side note, Flock took 6th place and was the top in the browser category. Flock is based off of Firefox 2 with the integration of several social networking and other web services.
