Granted I don’t talk as much about Thunderbird in here as I do Firefox. Part of that is because their isn’t as much news or anything to talk about with Thunderbird. On Wednesday Mozilla’s, Chief Lizard Wrangler (CEO) Mitchell Baker posted in her blog that Mozilla has come to a point where they to decided what they want to do with Thunderbird. “We have concluded that we should find a new, separate organizational setting for Thunderbird; one that allows the Thunderbird community to determine its own destiny.” Mozilla has come up with three possible options: Option 1. The other day sim asked on the Weekly Update 2007-07-23 post “what’s content handling”. This was in reference to the report that “content-handling is not going to make Fx3”. So what is content-handling? It is a neat feature that would let you setup Firefox on what to do when it came across certain types of content. Technically, this feature already exists if you go under Tools, Options.., Content tab and then under File Types click Manage… However with Firefox 3, it was more of a user-interface (UI) type change. The blog article, Fx 3 User Interface (UI) Redo shows an…

The social networking site, Facebook has bought Parakey for an undisclosed amount. For those of you not familiar with Parakey it was the joint venture project by Firefox Founders Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt, see The Firefox Kid for more about Parakey. I was not too sure what to make of this at first. This has been an ongoing project for Ross & Hewitt for quite some time. But as I read further into the article this isn’t one of those ‘buy-out’ type of acquisitions where everything is sold and the original party just walks away from the project (but…

Mozilla has released Firefox 2.0.0.5, a security upgrade. From mozillaZine.org: Firefox 2.0.0.5 includes a fix for firefoxurl:// security exploit, which allows an attacker to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to trick Firefox into executing malicious code. Whether Firefox or IE is responsible for the flaw has been a matter of debate over the past week. The Mozilla Foundation security advisory about the firefoxurl:// issue maintains that it’s a problem in IE and notes that other applications could be exploited in the same way. Others have argued that it’s Firefox’s responsibility to vet incoming data (something 2.0.0.5 now does). You should…
Well, the big-wigs at Microsoft are at it again. As if tracking cookies weren’t bad enough, Microsoft has recently filed a patent that would ” look at what’s on your hard drive and serve you targeted advertisements based on that data.” The patent application notes that the software in question could be a part of Windows or a stand-alone app: An advertising framework may reside on a user computer, whether it’s a part of the OS, an application or integrated within applications. Applications, tools, or utilities may use an application program interface to report context data tags such as key…
