Had an opportunity last week to test out Windows 8 Professional. I did this on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine using Oracle’s VirtualBox free VM software. I have to say I was impressed at how well Windows 8 handled, especially since I was running it with only 2 GB of (virtual) RAM. I launched IE10 (which is very different from IE9) so I could download and install Chrome and Firefox. Now, the two biggest complaints about Windows 8 is that you have to boot into the Metro (or Modern) UI and the removal of the Start Menu. Last week, there was an…
Actually, some of this news is from a couple weeks ago. Not as much tablet news lately as there was earlier this year with the big trade shows. Acer Shipping 7M Android, 3M Windows Tablets in 2013 — If there was ever a doubt that Android was leading the tablet market. I find it a bit odd that Acer is planning on shipping some 3-million Windows based tablets this year. They did announced [IT World] last month they were going to ship Windows RT tablets, however they had complained that Microsoft needed to make improvements to the Windows RT platform. Contact the developer last night about the issue with Identity Chooser 1.8.2 not working with Thunderbird 20 Beta. Received an email earlier today with version 1.8.3 which works fine now with Thunderbird 20 Beta. Version 1.8.3 has already been released on AMO or you can update via your Thunderbird Add-ons Manager by right-clicking on the add-on and selecting Find Updates.
It appears the Identity Chooser add-on (version 1.8.2) and Thunderbird 20 Beta (to be released as Thunderbird 17.0.5 on April 2nd) do not play well together. I discovered I could only reply to messages. I was no longer able to compose, forward or ‘edit as new’ (though never used that feature) a message. Also could not change the sending account in a message I was replying. After disabling the add-on, everything appears to be working as it should. After checking on AMO and seeing there was not a newer version on the development channel, I contacted the developer letting him know of the issues. I…
As mentioned in the Thunderbird 20 Beta Release post, there was an issue with Lightning 2.2b1 and Provider for Google Calendar 0.18 versions. Provider for Google Calendar 0.21pre fixes issues with the add-on not communicating/authenticating with the Google servers. The updated add-on can be downloaded from here then installed over the old 0.18 version.
Due to development restrictions placed by Apple for third-party browsers, Mozilla announced they have no plans at this time to release a version of Firefox which would support the Apple iPhone or iPad. In order to accommodate Apple’s restrictions, Mozilla would need to redesign the Firefox rendering engine to use WebKit (used by Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari) instead of the current Gecko. via Tom’s Hardware
Mozilla released an emergency update for Thunderbird on March 11th, 2013 with versions 17.0.4 and 17.0.4esr. This release addresses issues in regards to security advisory MFSA 2013-29. The next scheduled releases are Thunderbird 17.0.5 and 17.0.5esr on April 2nd, 2013.
*DEVELOPMENTAL RELEASE* Mozilla released the first Beta for the upcoming Thunderbird 20 on March 8th, 2013. Lightning Users: if you are using Google Calendar with Lightning, you should wait on this update. Either Thunderbird 20 Beta 1 or Lightning 2.2beta1 seems to break the Google Calendar integration (even with version 0.18 of Provider for Google Calendar extension). Users will be continuously prompted to enter their Google Calendar (gmail) password, which suggests there is an authentication or communication issue between Thunderbird and the Google Calendar server. Fixes in Thunderbird 20 Beta 1 include Emails can now be sent to IDN based email addresses (bug 127399) along with various…
