How to manually check for add-on updates in Firefox 4+

Firefox 4 introduced the new integrated (into a tab) add-ons manager and sorta hid the Find Updates feature. In prior versions of Firefox there was a Find Updates button at the bottom right of the add-ons manager window. Add-ons manager window from Firefox 3.5 with Find Updates button at the bottom right. In Firefox 4.0 (as well 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0) this feature has been moved. On the upper right of the Add-ons Manager window (just to the left of the search box) is a gear icon which is also a drop-down menu. From there select the first option Check for…

Malware disguises itself as a microsoft update

…Like a previous attack that produced a fake Firefox security alert, the malware comes up when a user-agent string is detected from a Firefox user browsing a malicious web site. This time though, it comes up with a replica of the real Microsoft Update page, which you only see if you’re using Internet Explorer. “The same malicious web site is also known for hosting a fake Windows XP explorer scanner and Windows 7 scanner, said Chester Wiesniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos…”   Jun 09 2011 More Firefox malware disguises itself as a microsoft update- The Inquirer Go get it.

Firefox 7 UI Change

Update: First off thanks for the comments. Looks like I missed something, like the fact that I was running Firefox 7 Nightly maximized. Normally I only have the browser window only partial of the screen-width.  But this does bring up an interesting question, why not have everything on one row even if the browser window is not maximized? The first screenshot while a partial screen size, is almost 800 pixels wide which would be for those running 800×600 would be maximized. Just seems like wasted space in that title bar. While I was trying out the different versions of Firefox…

Turn Off RealPlayer “Download” Button

The newer versions of Real Player have added an annoying feature which will allow you to download a video playing in the browser. At first I thought disabling all the RealPlayer plugins within Firefox would take care of this. It did not and then I noticed the same thing happening in Chrome. After some poking around in RealPlayer (which I rarely use) I found out how to turn off this feature. Launch RealPlayer* From the RealPlayer drop-down menu at the upper left select Preferences.. Click the Download & Recording category (2nd from the bottom) You can either un-check the enable…

Fake Firefox warnings lead to scareware

Purveyors of fake security software don’t let much grass grow under their feet and continually make improvements to their social engineering lures. While most of the talk for the past month has been their move to Mac with fake Finder pop-ups that appear to scan your computer, they haven’t stopped innovating on Windows either… May 30, 2011 More Fake Firefox warnings lead to scareware | Naked Security Go get it.

Ant Video Add-on Secretly Collects Browsing Data.

I never have used this but a lot of people do it looks like. A high-rated Firefox extension with more than 7 million downloads secretly collects data about every website the open-source browser visits and combines it with uniquely traceable information tied to the user, an independent security researcher said.“The undisclosed behavior of the Ant Video Downloader and Player add-on takes place even when the Firefox private browsing mode is turned on or when users are availing themselves of anonymity services such as Tor. The add-on carries a rating of four out of five possible stars and gets an average…

Add-Ons Will Soon Work With Firefox Beta and Aurora

Mozilla is revamping the way Firefox add-ons are tested…Under the new proposal, add-on testing will be automated. Add-ons hosted on Mozilla’s website will be tested against any new Aurora and Beta builds and automatically marked as compatible unless some problem is discovered. For those add-ons that are not hosted on the official site, the updateURL mechanism will accomplish the same thing. The Mozilla blog says that the new setup will mean that the Aurora and Beta channels will be compatible with the vast majority of add-ons… “ More Webmonkey | Wired.com

No IE10 for Windows Vista

It seems the preview for IE10 release by Microsoft last week will only work on Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) and the future Windows 8. Microsoft has already shut-out Windows XP users from IE9, so now they are following suit with Vista and the future IE10. The good news here is Firefox 5 (due out in late June) will continue to support Windows Vista and (far as I know) Windows XP. Source: Seattle PI: Microsoft Blog

Old ‘Status Bar’

There’s an extension for that: Status-4-Evar. I wrote about this handy extension back in January before Mozilla re-did things in Firefox 4 Beta 11 and 12 by putting connection status messages and link targets in an over-lay above the add-on bar. But for those of you who rather have this appear in the ‘status bar’ can do so with this extension. A couple notes, in the toolbars menu it will still be listed as add-on bar. Also, you can still hide/unhide the add-on status bar via CTRL+/.  The extension is only for Firefox 4 and 4.2 (developmental/future Firefox 5).
