Netscape Mercury

I stumbled across this Wikipedia article earlier this week while doing some other research on Netscape. I thought this was interesting… Netscape Mercury is a standalone e-mail and news client in development by Netscape. Announced on June 11, 2007, the program is intended to accompany the web browser Netscape Navigator 9, and is based on Mozilla’s Thunderbird. The software is named after the ancient Greek god Mercury, the messenger. It replaces the former Netscape Mail & Newsgroups client included in versions 4 to 7.2. I guess Netscape is trying to get back to the all-in-one web browser, instant messenger, e-mail…

Toolbar Buttons

Recently a comment was left on my Get Mail Extension stating the add-on was no longer on AMO (addons.mozilla.org) and provided a link to his Toolbar Buttons extension. Once installed and you restart Firefox (SunBird, Flock or Thunderbird) right-click on the toolbar and select ‘Customize…’ , you will discover a treasure trove of new toolbar buttons. Simply drag and drop the buttons to your toolbar. Important: be sure to click ‘Done’ when finished. If you click the X instead, your changes will not be saved. A couple buttons I found useful were Undo Close Tab and Check for Update (much…

Safari Test Drive

Note: Most images can be viewed full size by clicking the image. I decided to download and take Safari for a ‘test drive’ today.  Sadly, I was not that impressed with the browser.  It does have a few nice features but they do not outweigh all the problems and general annoyances.   So there are some features Firefox does not have.  Safari displays  a ‘progress/load bar’ in the address bar (see last image for example).  Also, Safari will show a blue border around the active text box, including the address bar or search box.     One other nice feature…

Safari For Windows? How weird!

Okay now this is very weird (almost unnatural), Apple has released (Beta) Safari 3.0 for Windows. This use to be a Mac only browser, but now it seems Apple has wanted to get in on the “PC Browser War”. For those of you keeping track we have IE 7, Opera 9.5, Netscape Communicator 9, and Firefox 3 in addition to Safari all trying to compete to be your web browser. Percy at Mozilla Links has done a brief but ‘weird’ review of Safari. Here were his observations: It has beautiful fonts, and as it has been already said, they must…

Netscape 9 Beta 1 Released

Back in February, I posted: Netscape 9 Announced. Now, four months later Netscape Navigator Beta 1 has been release. Yes, they have resurrected the Navigator name in this version. Remember, Netscape 9 is built by AOL/Time Warner (not affiliated with Mozilla) off the Mozilla Fx 2 rendering engine (Gecko 1.8). You could almost call Netscape 9 a “power user’s” version of Fx 2. Besides the standard, Session Management, Spell Check, etc. it also has many other standard features which would require extensions in Fx 2: Resizeable Textarea – allows you to make a textarea larger or smaller URL Correction –…

Netscape 9 Announced

Per the Netscape Blog, Netscape 9 is in the developmental stages now. Much like Netscape 8, it is going to be browser only, it will not have Mail or Composer which were last included with Netscape 7.2 back in August 2004. However, unlike Netscape 8, this version will be released for Mac OS X and Linux as well as Windows. A few more details, this will be based on Firefox 2 (Gecko 1.8), include Live Bookmarks, Netscape Friends’ Activity Sidebar and Netscape Sitemail Notifier. I have no idea when this is going to be released but I am guessing late…

I use Flock for all my feeds but am disappointed that I could not get my favorite extension CoLT. When you click the above link you will be taken to an upload utility where you can either upload the Firefox Extension XPI file or the URL for the XPI file you want to convert to Flock. The…
