Firefox and POODLE Attack

Google researchers announced recently of the POODLE (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption) Attack which hackers take advantage of sites (around 0.3%) still using the outdated (introduced in 1996) SSLv3 security protocol. Mozilla has announced that SSLv3 will be disabled, unfortunately it won’t be until Firefox 34 which will be released on November 25th. However, user can (and are urged to) install the SSL Version Control extension which will disable SSLv3 on the fly. I would not be surprised though if Mozilla pushes out Firefox 33.1 update to have SSLv3 disabled in the coming days or weeks. Google Chrome is already testing changes to disable…

Windows Won’t Install Updates

Some months ago I resurrected a Windows 7 Ultimate computer I had retired a couple years ago after it threw one too many (and consecutive) BSODs. I suspected that all my problems likely stemmed from trying to ‘upgrade’ it from Windows Vista to Windows 7 when I really should have just bought an OEM version of Windows 7. Doing a clean install of Windows 7 Pro seemed to fix all my problems. This was back in April and I got busy with work and other projects. Plus, at that time I really didn’t have a place to keep it setup in my home…

Microsoft Announces Windows 10

No, the title is not a typo. Microsoft has announced today they are skipping over Windows 9 and going directly to Windows 10. Originally codenamed Windows Threshold, the new operating system essentially does away with the tiled “Metro” user interface that Microsoft had attempted to implement across its entire device line, from desktop PCs to Surface tablets and Widows Phone devices. It is such a substantial leap, according to Microsoft’s executive VP of operating systems, Terry Myerson, that the company decided it would be best to skip over Windows 9, the widely expected name for the next version. So it…

No iPads for the LA Clippers

First off, had no idea the former Microsoft CEO had purchased the Los Angeles Clippers. Anyway, he still supports Microsoft and has told the staff (including the head coach) ‘no iPads’. Ballmer has told the staff at the L.A. Clippers — including head coach Doc Rivers — that he doesn’t want iPads around the front office or on the bench. Ballmer tells Reuters that most of the Clippers organization is already using Windows, though he conceded that some of the coaches and players are not. So, guess that means they will be using Surface Tablets. via GeekWire

Prohibiting Pasting of Passwords

We have been told over and over and over again to use strong passwords. If you can remember your password then it is too weak. Because of this, many people use password vaults or password managers to store their super strong impossible to remember passwords. When they need to log into the site, they simply paste the password from their vault or use their password manager to fill-in the password field. Seems like a good security practice as the users have a very strong password…apparently not. Some sites are no longer allowing you to paste in your password (some may or…

Firefox 29 and Australis

In the post yesterday we asked if the screenshot below was that of Firefox or Chrome. The answer is Firefox. Firefox 29 Beta 1 release with the new Australis theme/UI. This is the first major UI change since Firefox 4 was released on March 22, 2011 (after over a year of developmental releases). Firefox 4 also introduced Tabs on Top, the hidden menu bar and the Firefox button, which with Firefox 29 will be a thing of the past. Kind of a shame too as it at least made Firefox standout from other browsers which are really all starting to…

Mozilla Pulls the Plug on a Firefox ‘Metro’ Version

On the Firefox Future Releases blog today, Johnathan Nightingale (VP Firefox) announced that Mozilla has decided that adopting Firefox for ‘Metro’ is not a battle worth fighting. The main reason is the overall lack of interest in having a ‘Metro’ version of Firefox. In late 2012, when I started up the Firefox for Metro team (I know that’s not what Microsoft calls it anymore, but it remains how we talk about it in Mozilla), it looked like the next battleground for the Web. Windows is a massive ecosystem and Microsoft pushes its new platforms hard. At first, it looked like…

Why Firefox won’t have a ‘Noisy Tabs’ feature

Earlier in January, a Google Chrome update include a new feature called Noisy Tabs which will put an indicator (speaker icon) on a tab that is playing audio. This helpful for when you do a session restore or you’re clicking links to open new tabs in the background then suddenly you have audio playing and have no idea which tab it is coming from. Instead of having to go through each tab you can quickly see which tab is “singing” by looking for the icon on the tab. So, I wondered if there was an add-on that added this functionality…

Microsoft Posts and Removes video Bashing iPhone

Over the weekend Microsoft had posted to their Windows Phone YouTube channel a video entitled: A fly on the wall in Cupertino? The video was about the (colorful) upcoming iPhone 5C. Seems the video did not go over well with social media, so Microsoft yanked it of their YouTube channel, but not before someone else had a chance to mirror the video. Microsoft’s response to Cnet about the video “was intended to be a lighthearted poke at our friends from Cupertino. But it was off the mark, and we’ve decided to pull it down.” Not really sure what all the uproar is about. The…

Lenovo to add Start Menu to their Windows 8 PCs

So it looks like Lenovo is taking matters into their own hands with Windows 8 and the lack of a Start Menu. Reports are they have signed a dealer with Pokki developer SweetLabs to preload a software suite which adds a Start Menu to some of their Windows 8 PCs. These include The IdeaPad and IdeaCenter models, and then the Think line of PCs. via Tom’s Hardware
