Thoughts on Win64 Firefox Plugin Restrictions

I understand what Mozilla is doing with in the Win64 Firefox in regards to only allowing the Flash NPAPI plugin. It starts to make sense if you look at the browser ‘market’ as a whole. Microsoft’s new Edge browser (Windows 10) does not support SilverLight and Java and neither does/will Chrome (Google plans to phase out NPAPI plugins by end of 2015). All of these browsers including the Win64 Firefox do support Flash. Also, remember Flash is integrated (no plugin) into Chrome as Google bribed paid Adobe to build a custom version of Flash directly into Chrome. It is almost painful…

Windows 10 KB3081424 a ‘Fix’ that causes endless crashing

Microsoft Microsoft Corporation 400,96 +1,84 +0,46% has outdone themselves this time. KB3081424 was suppose to be a cumulative fix for many issues including, but not limited to the big two; Nvidia NVIDIA Corporation 796,77 -27,46 -3,33% and Windows (File) Explorer crashing. However, this update itself has issues and some users ended up stuck in a perpetual reboot and crash loop. The update fails to install because of bad registry (in the ProfileList IDs) entries so Windows 10 abort the install and reboots. After rebooting it sees there is an update and tries to install KB3081424 again…which fails because of bad registry entries so the system reboots…lather, rinse,…

Firefox 38.1.1 ESR/39.0.3 Security Update Released

On August 6, 2015 Mozilla released an emergency security update for Firefox 38 ESR and Firefox 39 with the Firefox 38.1.1 ESR and Firefox 39.0.3 releases. These releases were a result of MFSA 2015-78: Same origin violation and local file stealing via PDF reader. From The Mozilla Security Blog: The vulnerability comes from the interaction of the mechanism that enforces JavaScript context separation (the “same origin policy”) and Firefox’s PDF Viewer. Mozilla products that don’t contain the PDF Viewer, such as Firefox for Android, are not vulnerable. The vulnerability does not enable the execution of arbitrary code but the exploit was able…

Solitaire and DVD Player on Windows 10 a Premium Add-on?!

So a couple things missing from Windows 10 were Solitare and native DVD Player. Solitaire is now in the Windows Store, and is free but video ad-supported. Don’t want the annoying 30-second video ads before each game?  Then give Microsoft MSFT 400,96 +1,84 +0,46% $1.49 a month (or get a year’s “subscription” for $9.99) and you can have an ad free game and some other ‘upgrades’. The scary thing is, I could see Microsoft making a lot of money off of this. The missing native DVD Player (I still don’t understand this one) can be replaced with the (may be free)…

Clean up after Windows 10 Upgrade

As I mentioned before, the installation added $Windows.~BT  & $Windows.~WS folders plus a windows.old folder. Some of this is the installation media, some of it is a backup of your Windows 7/8.1 data. If you are certain everything is working fine and your data and apps have transferred over, you can free up some disk space (about 16 GB in my case) by removing these folders. This can be done via the Windows Disk Cleanup Tool which you will need to be logged in as an administrator to access the ‘Remove System Files’ feature. SuperSite for Windows provides detailed step-by-step directions on…

Firefox 41/Chrome 45 and Netflix

What do the upcoming Firefox 41 (Windows 64-Bit) and Chrome 45 have in common? Neither will support Microsoft Silverlight. However, Netflix will continue to work on Chrome 45, because Netflix on Chrome use HTML5, not Silverlight. The same can not be said for Firefox though, where Netflix still uses Silverlight. Up until Firefox 33 in October 2014, with the introduction of the Open H.264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems plugin Firefox did not support HTML5. But, Netflix (being a paid service) uses DRM which was not supported until Firefox 38 in May 2015 when Mozilla added the Primetime Content Decryption Module by Adobe…

More Troubles for Nvidia

It has not been a good week for Nvidia Unfortunately, we could not get stock quote nvda this time.. Last weekend Windows 10 users with Nvidia video cards using dual displays were having issues with Nvidia’s management software and Windows Update fighting each other claiming they had an updated driver. The Nvidia update would work, but Windows Updated detected that driver as outdated and would install a driver that didn’t work correctly with Windows 10. Now comes news they are recalling their 8-inch Shield Tablets in the US due to fears the device overheats and the battery may catch fire. Nvidia…

Windows 10 CAN Retain Your Default Apps.

Note: I have yet to try this, so not sure where and when in the setup process this is presented. Still trying to get Windows 10 installed on one of my two test machines. Yesterday, one of them started acting up (BSOD) while I was researching how to do a forced upgrade to Windows 10. While BSOD use to be common with this system, they seemed to have disappeared when I did a clean install of Windows 7 about a year ago. The timing of that BSOD though makes me wonder if that machine was possessed by HAL 9000. So over the…

Mozilla Blasts Microsoft over Choice and Control in Windows 10

Mozilla is not happy about Microsoft’s MSFT 400,96 +1,84 +0,46% changes in Windows 10 when it comes to the user’s default browser. The biggest complaint is users who upgrade to Windows 10 will have their default browser changed to Microsoft’s new Edge Browser. Further, it is no longer as simple as going into Firefox to set it as the default browser. Sometimes we see great progress, where consumer products respect individuals and their choices. However, with the launch of Windows 10 we are deeply disappointed to see Microsoft take such a dramatic step backwards. It is bewildering to see, after almost 15 years…
