Where a Touch Screen Does Not Work

Touch screens are becoming more and more common. From Smartphones and Tablets to touchscreen monitors that take advantage of Windows 8 Metro Interface. However, trying to put a touch screen in a car while can work for some of the ‘physical’ controls, should not be a replacement for all all of those said controls. Unfortunately, that is just what Cadillac’s CUE system has done, it has eliminated all the physical controls for climate control as well as the entertainment system. The 8-inch screen does support a really nice 800×480 resolution and runs off of Linux (hate to think if it…

Kingston’s 1TB USB Stick

Yes, 1 TB as in 1024 GB! Kingston had announced they had made the first 1TB USB stick during this weeks Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. Tom’s Hardware was able to get their hands on one, well a prototype (as seen below) at least at CES. Given the Kingston 512 GB model has a price tag of a little under $1800, they are not going to have a working version of the 1 TB just out in the open. The 1 TB model will support USB 3.0 with read/write speeds upto (provided your system has USB 3.0 ports) 240MB/s and 160MB/s….

WP SuperCache Plugin Danger!

Up until recently I’ve been using the WP SuperCache plugin to help speed up my WordPress sites. I was working on one of the sites the other night and had Weaver II run a diagnostics to see if there were any problems with the theme. It came back with a warning that I was using the WP SuperCache plugin and that this would prevent the automatic mobile device version of the theme from working. They did suggest a couple other caching plugins that would work without issues. The first one I tried was very complicated to setup and it actually slowed…

New in 2013

It has been a while since I’ve done much with this blog. That is going to change this year, call it a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ if you will. Most of what I plan on doing with this blog is going to be more Computer/Internet related. To be more specific: WordPress. Been doing a lot of work with WordPress for the past few days. I currently have around 10 WordPress sites four of which are actually blog, the others are ‘websites’. The Weaver II theme is one the best themes out there on WordPress. I’ll be doing a more in-depth review later on of this theme. There are…

USB/W-iFi Cufflinks

Here’s your chance to be like James Bond and have some a ‘spy toy’ of your own.  Brookstone is selling these stylish polished silver Wi-Fi enabled and USB cufflinks. One cufflink conceals a 2GB USB drive while the other a Wi-Fi hotspot. Like James Bond’s other toys, these are a bit pricey starting at $250. via Tom’s Hardware

El Guru’s Gallery 2.0 Now Open

Hopefully this will be the last time I will have to move The Gallery for a long while. As mentioned before, for security reasons I had to shutdown the old gallery which was using ZenPhoto. I have converted The Gallery to a WordPress site, allowing me to use the same Weaver theme across all the El Guru sites. This gallery uses the NextGEN Gallery plugin. Visit El Guru’s Gallery 2.0

Gallery Offline unit Further Notice

NOTE: gallery.elguru.me, azscenicephotos.com and thearizonasunset.com  are being redirected to this blog post temporally. Due to security issues I am taking the gallery offline until further notice. I am working on getting the Gallery setup on a new content provider. While I did like the layout of Zen Photo, it has been a source of security issues on our server which has affected some of our sister sites. While Zen Photo has been prudent on updating their software, trying to install said updates is very difficult and time consuming. This usually requires a complete re-install of the application and sometime even requires recreating the galleries. An announcement will…

A USB Toaster

Okay, not exactly the kind of toaster that will turn you bread into well toast. ThinkGeek has come out with a USB Toaster hub along with (each sold separately) 4 different pieces of 4-GB USB toast. The whole set is going to cost you $128 USD (plus tax if applicable) with free shipping (if you spend at least $75 USD). I suppose for some people $128 ($28 for the ‘toaster’ and $25 for each piece of ‘toast’) is just pocket change and/or they just find this too cool. Otherwise, you can get much more space for a whole lot less. About a month ago…

Gallery Fixed

It appears the Gallery had gone down on November 10th due to some issues with the gallery software. Users we’re seeing an HTTP 500: Internal Server error. We made some updates to the gallery platform (ZenPhoto) and were able to get the gallery restore on November 22nd. At this time there has been no new photos added since this past summer. I do have some photos on my Android that I still need to download and hope to get those posted in the coming weeks.

How to Fix: Stuck in Maintenance Mode

While rare, there are occasions while updating a plugin or theme things  may not go smoothly. I was trying to update a theme on one of my (many) WordPress sites. The update was successful, however the server hiccuped  before maintenance mode was turned off. So the site was stuck in maintenance mode, which means you can not access the front end or even your dashboard. I do believe though there is a some type of safety timeout threshold in place so that your not permanently locked out of your dashboard. I had a similar issue while trying to do a…
