For some odd reason AdBlock Plus in Thunderbird choose to use the keyboard CTRL+SHIFT+V to open the sidebar (blockable items). The problem with using this is CTRL+SHIFT+V is the universal keyboard shortcut to Paste as Plain Text of Paste without Formatting. After some searching I found a thread from October 2012 on the Adblock Plus Forums that provided a solution: From within Thunderbird go to Tools > Options > Advanced (OS X: Thunderbird > Preferences… | Linux: Edit > Preferences) and then click the Config Editor… button in the lower right of the Options/Preferences Window. If needed click the I’ll be careful, I promise…

“Dropbox users who run Firefox on Windows may want to check the plugins listing of the browser as the browser may have picked up the Dropbox Update plugin automatically after a recent update.“Mozilla, for unknown reasons, never fixed the automatic plugin installation issue in Firefox. While you can block the automatic installation of plugins manually in Firefox, there is no default indicator or permission system in place to protect users.“Firefox checks various locations on the computer automatically for plugins and integrates them automatically.“Programs too may install plugins in Firefox without informing users about that. This is one of the reasons…
Claus at grand stream dreams, linked in his recent Anti Virus Software Updates blog posts an interesting article about issues Windows users were having with high CPU load. The culprit as it turns out was an optional (though installed by default) of avast! antivirus (both free and premium versions) called avast NG. The article (which has been Google Translated from another language) includes step-by-step instructions on how to uninstall the unwanted components (warning: restart required to complete the removal) as well as screenshots (in a another language). On my three systems (generic Windows 7 Desktop, HP Windows 7 Laptop and Gateway Windows 8.1),…
Another thing I did not know about Windows 8: Product/Activation/Registration Key is stored in BIOS. Unlike Windows 7 and older, chances are there is not a product key sticker on your computer. I did a very through examination of my Windows 8 Gateway Desktop and noticed there is not a ‘Windows Key’ sticker anywhere to be found. What if something happens to your hard drive and you are not able to recover the contents (mechanical failure)? If you have a recovery CD/DVD/BD/USB you might be okay once you get a new hard drive installed. If you don’t, it is going to…
Since I am in a Microsoft program at my local community college, I can get a lot of Microsoft products for free via DreamSpark. However, nearly everything on DreamSpark is in an ISO format (Microsoft Project 2013 offers a web-based installer or ISO download). The hassle with ISO files is after you take the time to download them, you need to then spend more time burning them to a CD/DVD/BD or USB drive (after spending even more time trying to locate said media). Not with Windows 8/8.1! The process is so much simpler. After you download your ISO, Right-click on the…
Some months ago I resurrected a Windows 7 Ultimate computer I had retired a couple years ago after it threw one too many (and consecutive) BSODs. I suspected that all my problems likely stemmed from trying to ‘upgrade’ it from Windows Vista to Windows 7 when I really should have just bought an OEM version of Windows 7. Doing a clean install of Windows 7 Pro seemed to fix all my problems. This was back in April and I got busy with work and other projects. Plus, at that time I really didn’t have a place to keep it setup in my home…
No, the title is not a typo. Microsoft has announced today they are skipping over Windows 9 and going directly to Windows 10. Originally codenamed Windows Threshold, the new operating system essentially does away with the tiled “Metro” user interface that Microsoft had attempted to implement across its entire device line, from desktop PCs to Surface tablets and Widows Phone devices. It is such a substantial leap, according to Microsoft’s executive VP of operating systems, Terry Myerson, that the company decided it would be best to skip over Windows 9, the widely expected name for the next version. So it…
Earlier in January, a Google Chrome update include a new feature called Noisy Tabs which will put an indicator (speaker icon) on a tab that is playing audio. This helpful for when you do a session restore or you’re clicking links to open new tabs in the background then suddenly you have audio playing and have no idea which tab it is coming from. Instead of having to go through each tab you can quickly see which tab is “singing” by looking for the icon on the tab. So, I wondered if there was an add-on that added this functionality…
“… There are 64-bit versions of Firefox, and they are made available by Mozilla for Linux distributions and Mac OS X. If you are looking for a Windows 64-bit version on the other hand, you won’t find it advertised on the official project website, and will have a hard time finding references made to it on the site as well.…“Third-party forks of Firefox exist that provide access to a 64-bit version. You can download the 64-bit version of Pale Moon for example. The browser is compatible with all 64-bit operating systems from Windows Vista on and supports all the things…
Mozilla released an update for Thunderbird the 24.0.x branch on November 19th, 2013. Thunderbird 24.1.1 addressed an issue with Windows users receiving a UAC prompt when attempting to update Thunderbird using the Background Update service. See bug 926975 for more information. Depending on update settings, users should automatically be prompted to update to Thunderbird 24.1.1 or may do so manually via Help > About Thunderbird or downloading and installing via the getthunderbird.com site.
