According to the Firefox:2.0.0.7:Test Plan, Fx 2.0.0.7 is going to be a security fix. This release will address the QuickTime Vulnerability announced last week and could be out later today. All other prior landings on the 2.0.0.7 branch have been moved to the 2.0.0.8 branch. Fx 2.0.0.8 is currently tentatively scheduled for an early October release. More news to come….
It started simple enough…I was looking for a nice background texture for another website I was building. Went to my usual source, Absolute Background Textures Archive to see what I could fine. This site is actually part of a larger grouping of sites known as GRSites.com and has been providing free textured backgrounds since 1997. They offer a whole lot more than just free textured backgrounds. One of the several new services they now offer is a logo maker. It seems Microsoft (M$) pushed (as in not telling/notifying anyone) a ‘stealth’ update of the Windows Update. This happened back on August 23rd or in my case (any many others running XP) July 30th. Further even if you told M$ you didn’t want their stinkin’ updates, you got updated. From Mozilla Links GNUCITIZEN, a “creative hacker organization”, has disclosed details on a severe security vulnerability affecting Firefox users that have installed the QuickTime plugin on Windows or Mac OS X, which at a minimum includes all iTunes users. The vulnerability is based on QuickTime Media Link files (.qtl), simple XML files that include details about the media file to be played (like an .avi, .mov or .mp3) and other settings. NoScript can be described as a firewall for your Firefox. However much like a firewall, NoScript is going to require some configuration as you go. The extension blocks Java Script, Java and other executable content except from trusted domains you allow.
