Gmail to handle Mailto/Send Link…

New with the Firefox 3.0.2 release, Gmail has been bundled as a web mail provider. Gmail can automatically handle (in lieu of Thunderbird or Outlook) Send Link… (via file or context menu) and ‘Mailto’ links with a few short steps:

  1. Open the Options window (or Preferences on Linux and Mac),
  2. Click the Applications tab
  3. Type ‘mailto’ in the Search Field
  4. In the Action column Select Use Gmail.
  5. Click OK (no restart needed)

Thanks for the tip Claus.

  1. About time! Thanks for the heads up!

  2. Once again, Firefox saves the day. Thanks Mozilla Devs!

  3. I can get the mailto: to work on my Mac but still cannot find the key for Send Link…what am I missing?

  4. My Firefox option screen is set to Thunderbird which is my choice, but I still get sent to the Welcome to Gmail page.

I can’t shut off Gmail as my mailto link. I’ve canceled my Gmail account, other Google accounts and verified the defaults for Windows, Thunderbird, and Firefox. They all point to Thunderbird, but when I click a “mailto” it takes me to the “Welcome to Gmail” page.

I suspect I’m going to have to perform surgery on my registry to solve this. Any ideas?

  5. GREAT! THANKS!!! Exactly what I was looking for. I used to have the gtoolbar installed just for this, but since the system restore I was missing it, but hate wasting the screen real-estate. Perfect!

  6. Did this break in FF 3.5? It isn’t working for me. Might be something just on my system, but anyone else having the Send Link ignored?

  7. Great, exactly what I was missing 🙂

    using 3.5.2

I have done what you suggested:

    # Open the Options window (or Preferences on Linux and Mac),
    # Click the Applications tab
    # Type ‘mailto’ in the Search Field
    # In the Action column Select Use Gmail.
    # Click OK (no restart needed) (THERE IS NO OK BUTTON ON A MAC)

    Google sent this message

  12. Can’t thank you adequately. I’ve spent many hours in the past trying to get Firefox to handle email sending correctly, usually just giving up. Your tip enabled me to get Gmail to accept “Send link…” within seconds of reading it. You truly did me a good deed, thanks!

I really appreciate the tip but I still get the Error 404 numeric code 7 nonsense.
Apparently it is very common. That is using firefox on Linux but windows and mac users have the same issue.

If anyone finds a solution please post it.
    Thanks again for trying.

  16. Thank you for another wonderful article. Where else may just anybody get that type of info in such a perfect approach of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I am on the search for such info.

  17. Instructions clear function correctly but does not send a link. Leads to requiring cookies that leads to redirect that fails. Thus going to nowhere is a waste.

  18. Thank you, thank you, thank you! After friends used my computer, I lost this function, was going crazy! You saved the day!!!!
