Firefox 3.5.1 Released

Firefox 3.5.1 was released earlier today. This ‘firedrill’ release addresses issues with slow start-ups on Windows builds as well as a recent CRITICAL vulnerability discovered in the TraceMonkey Java Script Optimizer. This vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing. Non-critical fixes and enhancements which were planned for the original Firefox 3.5.1 release will be implemented in the upcoming Firefox 3.5.2 release currently scheduled for release at the end of July or early August.

Auto-updates should be occurring in the next 24-48 hours, otherwise users may get the latest update by going to Help menu and selecting Check For Updates. FYI: for those using the recently updated Google Gears it appears the extension developer has an incorrect max version setting on the add-on resulting in an ‘incompatible extension’ notice when updating. Hopefully this will be corrected soon as this extension is used by many WordPress.com users.

Finally this reminder from Mozilla Developer Network, If you’re still using Firefox 2.0.0.x, this version is no longer supported and contains known security vulnerabilities. Please upgrade to Firefox 3.5 by downloading Firefox 3.5.1 from www.firefox.com.

  1. After updating to 3.5.1 Firefox takes twice as long to open. Go figure. I had already cleaned out all of the Windows and IE temporary files like you suggested but didn’t mess around with any of the vacuuming programs. No habla Espanol.

  2. Since I download 3.5 I am missing the scroll bar on some of the websites that I use (Facebook; homepage, not just the apps)and it des not recognize the java installed on my computer even though it is the most recent java version. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the java as directed and still it says I don’t have it installed. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled FF3.5 followed by uninstall and reinstall java…still nothing.

The scroll bar problem is new as well. Someone said there may be a compatibility issue but it worked fine before I updated FF. I’m thinking you tried to fix something that wasn’t broke and now it is broken.

I really want to be able to continue using facebook so I need a quick resolution to this problem or I will have to go back to IE since I can scroll there.

  3. Haven’t heard of either of these issues from anyone else yet. Missing scroll bar could be a theme or add-on conflict. 3.5.1. did include a security patch updated for TraceMonkey the Java Script optimizer. You can try rolling back to Firefox 3.5 by uninstalling 3.5.1 and get 3.5 here:
