The tweaks and extensions sections on the Firefox Extensions Guru’s Wiki have been updated to reflect compatibility for Firefox 8 Nightly (8.0a1) Builds. Another ‘extensions check update’ will be performed in about 2-weeks on the wiki.

Firefox 8 Nightly Now Available

Firefox 8 is now available on the nightly channel. If you are already running Nightly (Firefox 7.0a1), you may be able to update by going to Help > About Nightly. Otherwise you may be directed to the Nightly Download Page on Mozilla Central. Note: At this time, the merge for Aurora from Firefox 6 to Firefox 7 as well as Beta from Firefox 5 to Firefox 6 have not yet been completed. We will post when these merges have been completed.

Thunderbird Merges Completed

The merges for Thunderbird 6 onto the Beta Channel, Thunderbird 7 onto the Earlybird Channel as well as Thunderbird 8 onto the daily channel has been completed. You can move to the next version within your channel (Thunderbird 7 Daily to Thunderbird 8 Daily) by going to Help > About Thunderbird (or Earlybird or Daily). Win XP SP1/2000 Support Ending with TBird 8

There is talk of ending Windows 2000 support starting with Thunderbird 8. This is in part due to move to MSVC (Microsoft Visual C++) 2010 based compiler which requires Windows XP SP2 or newer OS. Thunderbird 8 is now on the Daily Branch is scheduled for release on November 8, 2011.

Win 2000/XP SP1 Support Ending with Fx 8

There is talk of ending Windows 2000 support starting with Firefox 8. This is in part due to move to MSVC (Microsoft Visual C++) 2010 based compiler which requires Windows XP SP2 or newer OS. Firefox 8 is now on the Nightly Branch is scheduled for release on November 8, 2011. Also, there is chance 64-Bit Windows support may be coming with Firefox 8. We will post more about this as more information is released.

How to Remove avast! WebRep

While I was in Chrome over the weekend, I noticed avast! also install the WebRep add-on in this browser as well. Further, in Firefox I could only disabled the add-on, not remove. A quick Google search turned up this post in the avast! forums. To remove the Web Rep, right-click on the avast! icon in the taskbar and select Open avast! User Interface then click on the Additional Protection tab. From there select WebRep and click Uninstall next to the browsers you want to remove the plugin from within. Unable to Add Search Engines

If you find yourself not being able to add a search engine into the search bar chance are you may have a damaged search.sqlite file. In which case this ca be resolved by: Locate your Profile Folder Close Firefox From within your Profile Folder remove or rename the file search.sqlite Restart Firefox and attempt to add the new search engine again If you are still unable to add the search engine refer to this mozillaZine KB article for additional troubleshooting steps.

Remove Vertical Reply Lines

By default every time you reply to a message, Thunderbird adds a colored line down the sides to ‘frame’ each particular reply.  This can get rather distracting after awhile. Plus it makes the overall length of the email a lot longer as the message content area gets narrower with each reply.
