Thoughts on Win64 Firefox Plugin Restrictions

I understand what Mozilla is doing with in the Win64 Firefox in regards to only allowing the Flash NPAPI plugin. It starts to make sense if you look at the browser ‘market’ as a whole. Microsoft’s new Edge browser (Windows 10) does not support SilverLight and Java and neither does/will Chrome (Google plans to phase out NPAPI plugins by end of 2015). All of these browsers including the Win64 Firefox do support Flash. Also, remember Flash is integrated (no plugin) into Chrome as Google bribed paid Adobe to build a custom version of Flash directly into Chrome. It is almost painful…

Windows 10 KB3081424 a ‘Fix’ that causes endless crashing

Microsoft Microsoft Corporation 394,94 +5,61 +1,44% has outdone themselves this time. KB3081424 was suppose to be a cumulative fix for many issues including, but not limited to the big two; Nvidia NVIDIA Corporation 877,57 +0,22 +0,03% and Windows (File) Explorer crashing. However, this update itself has issues and some users ended up stuck in a perpetual reboot and crash loop. The update fails to install because of bad registry (in the ProfileList IDs) entries so Windows 10 abort the install and reboots. After rebooting it sees there is an update and tries to install KB3081424 again…which fails because of bad registry entries so the system reboots…lather, rinse,…

In the run box enter appwiz.cpl and press enter to bring up the Programs and Features control panel Windows 8.1: Hold down the Windows Logo Key and Press X, then select Programs and Features at the top of the menu. Remove Homegroup/Network Icon from Desktop

For some odd reason after certain Windows Updates, I will find a Homegroup or Network icon on my desktop after rebooting. Normally to remove unwanted icons, one would simply drag it to the recycle bin or right-click and delete. Doesn’t work for this pesky icon. Removing it is quite simple though: Go to your Windows Desktop (Windows Key + D) Right-click on your desktop and select Personalize On the Personalization screen left side click Change Desktop Icons You may notice Network (even though the Homegroup or Network icon is on your desktop) is not checked, put a check in the box and click…

Firefox 38.1.1 ESR/39.0.3 Security Update Released

On August 6, 2015 Mozilla released an emergency security update for Firefox 38 ESR and Firefox 39 with the Firefox 38.1.1 ESR and Firefox 39.0.3 releases. These releases were a result of MFSA 2015-78: Same origin violation and local file stealing via PDF reader. From The Mozilla Security Blog: The vulnerability comes from the interaction of the mechanism that enforces JavaScript context separation (the “same origin policy”) and Firefox’s PDF Viewer. Mozilla products that don’t contain the PDF Viewer, such as Firefox for Android, are not vulnerable. The vulnerability does not enable the execution of arbitrary code but the exploit was able…

Solitaire and DVD Player on Windows 10 a Premium Add-on?!

So a couple things missing from Windows 10 were Solitare and native DVD Player. Solitaire is now in the Windows Store, and is free but video ad-supported. Don’t want the annoying 30-second video ads before each game?  Then give Microsoft MSFT 394,94 +5,61 +1,44% $1.49 a month (or get a year’s “subscription” for $9.99) and you can have an ad free game and some other ‘upgrades’. The scary thing is, I could see Microsoft making a lot of money off of this. The missing native DVD Player (I still don’t understand this one) can be replaced with the (may be free)…

Disable Extension Signing in Nightly and Developer Builds

Mozilla has allowed extension signing not to be enforced on the Nightly and Developer Edition (Aurora) builds for add-on developers. However, it is enabled by default though when you install or update to these builds. To turn off the extension signing follow these steps: In a new tab type: about:config in Firefox’s address bar and hit enter. Confirm you will be careful if a warning message is displayed. Search for xpinstall.signatures.required. Double-click on the preference name so that its value is set to false. Restart the browser to reactivate any disabled extensions The release version of Firefox 41 (September 2015) will still…

OAuth2 Demonstrated

I had talked about OAuth2 briefly a couple weeks ago, but hadn’t really tried it since my Gmail accounts were already setup in Thunderbird.  A few days ago I created another Gmail account to handle everything associated with my Firefox Blog as well as Bugzilla emails. I had been using an @ffextensionguru.com address I had setup up through my hosting provider. The problem is this provider only does POP for free. If I want IMAP support then I needed to upgrade to a business email (5 Boxes with Unlimited Space) for about $96 / year. Since I monitor this email address on…
