Changes To Tab Bar Behavior

Firefox 5 introduces a new feature that changes the way tab bar behaves when you close a tab. In Google Chrome, when you close a tab, the remaining tabs do not immediately resize. This allows you to keep closing tabs without having to move your mouse. Once you mouse off the tab bar then the remaining tabs will resize to adjust to the space on the tab bar. This feature has already been implemented on Firefox 5 Aurora as well as Beta. For those who prefer the old behavior, I am certain there is an about:config tweak, however I am…

Nightly/Central Label

Just wanted to clarify that mozilla-central is the Nightlies channel for Firefox as in some places you will see mozilla-central. Further, Thunderbird is transitioning to the rapid release cycle as well with the labels comm-central (nightly), comm-aurora and comm-beta.

Firefox for Mobile

While we did say that we had ‘no big plans’ for this year we are launching a new category, Firefox for Mobile. This category is going to be reserved for release and support information as well as extension reviews for the Firefox for Mobile browser aka Fennec. We have also created a ‘mobile friendly’ version of the blog at http://blog.ffextensionguru.mobi. For added convenience there is a mobile barcode link on the sidebar.  Please note: content is automatically transferred from the traditional blog to the mobile friendly blog. However, there may be up to an 1-hour delay in new content appearing on…

Prevent Websites From Resizing Firefox Window

Since I have a large monitor I am able to run a very high resolution (1920×1080). As such, I do not have my Firefox window maximized but rather I have it taking the full screen vertically and about half the screen horizontally. There are times I will go to a website, where the developer has decided that the Firefox window should be maximized or a different size. This very annoying as I have to resize the window back the way I want it to be. Even more annoying when I click a link on that site and changes the size…

Merge Date vs Release Date

It is still a learning process for the new Thunderbird rapid release schedule. Earlier this month Mozilla Developer’s News blog explained the difference between the merge and release dates. To sum it up, the dates show on the release page (as well as those posted here) are the date the code is being merged on to the particular channel. The actual release can be upto 1-week to allow for testing to ensure the release is stable enough for public consumption. This however only applies to Nightly to Aurora and Aurora to Beta. However, for ‘final releases’, the date listed for…

Disable Addon Compatibility Checking Fx 7

I mentioned in the Add-on Compatibility Reporter post, I had installed Firefox 7 Nightly but was having trouble getting the addon comparability ‘safe-guard’ turned off via an about:config tweak as I had in the past for other developmental builds. Girish Mony commented for those who just want to disable the compatibility checking add the following Boolean entry and set it to false: extensions.checkCompatibility.nightly This only works for Firefox 7 Nightly builds. Not sure what is going to happen when Firefox 7 moves to the Aurora channel on July 5th.

Thunderbird Numbering Changing

While trying to get some updated info on the next release of Thunderbird 3.3 (Miramar) I came across a thread in the Thunderbird Builds forum discussing the numbering change. Simply put, the Thunderbird developers want to have the version numbering match that of Firefox/Gecko. It also sounds as if Thunderbird is going to be following in Firefox footsteps with it’s own rapid release cycle. So the following numbering changes will be taking effect soon: Thunderbird 3.3 (Miramar) >> Thunderbird 5 Builds which will be produced from comm-aurora >> Thunderbird 6 Thunderbird Nightly (3.4a1pre) >> Thunderbird 7 For those who are…

Clear Cache & Cookies – The Easy Way

One question I tend to get a lot is ‘How Do I Clear My Cache and Cookies in Firefox?‘.  I will give Microsoft kudos for making this process fairly simple (three steps) in Internet Explorer 9. Mozilla, on the other hand has made the process fairly complicated (more so with the newer Firefox versions). To get to the Clear All History window where you can select to clear cache, cookies and other data: Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4 on Windows XP: Tools > Options > Privacy Tab >Link: clear your recent history. Firefox 4 on Windows Vista and 7: Firefox…
