Tab Utilities

I was pointed to this add-on in the Firefox Builds forum when I had first inquired why my App Tabs were loading in Firefox 9 Beta upon start-up even though I had Don’t load tabs until selected checked. I had thought that my profile was broken (which it was, but unrelated to this normal behavior). This after being told App Tabs are for web applications not normal pages.I know I was not using them for the intended purpose, but I liked how the app tab took up 85% less space on my tab bar. Tab Utilities allows me to ‘Faviconize’…

Changes to “Don’t Load Tabs” option

Firefox 9 is going to bring a change to the new Don’t load tabs until selected feature which was introduced in Firefox 8. In Firefox 8, when Don’t load tabs until selected option is checked, ALL tabs (normal and pinned/app) don’t load until selected. However, in Firefox 9.0 (release date December 20th, 2011) only regular tabs will not be loaded until selected, pinned/app tabs will load on start-up and prior to the last viewed tab. There was talk in Bug 674452 of adding a Always restore pinned tabs sub-option (checked by default) under the Don’t load tabs until selected option,…

Clear Firefox Button

As a result of the UI changes in Firefox 8 with the inverted (white) icons, the add-on App Button Clear does not work correctly. Besides being ‘incompatible’, when the add-on is forced to work in Firefox 8, it turns the App (Firefox) button white instead of clear. However, there is a userChrome.css tweak that will make the Firefox button clear (also works if you are using the Moveable Firefox button add-on). Simply add the below lines to your userChrome.css file and restart Firefox [directions]. /* Makes Firefox Button Transparent */ #appmenu-button{ background: transparent !important; border: 1px solid rgba(0,0,0,0.3) !important; border-top:none!important;…

Starting with a Fresh Profile

Updated 03/09/2013: Removed references to now defunct Personas Themes. Updated 11/16/2011: Added info for backup and restore of Greasemonkey and Stylish scripts. Also added new step in the Starting Over section. If you’ve been using the same profile since Firefox 3.6  (or older) you may run into performance issues with newer versions of Firefox. In the case of Firefox 8, some users have reported the browser is very unstable. This can be caused by bad/out-dated extensions and/or a damaged profile. With a new profile you are starting over from scratch with Firefox at its ‘factory default’ settings. However, you can bring…

OptimizeGoogle 0.79 & Firefox 8.0

A regular on Go Firefox! had been having some issues with Firefox 8 crashing when using Google, specifically when clicking images. After some trial error of restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled and re-enabling them one at a time (the best way to find a troublesome add-on) they determined the troublemaker was ironically OptimizeGoogle 0.79 add-on. After a little for digging I noticed this version was release on October 26th. However, in the version history section of the AMO page I noticed a version 0.79.1 submitted for review on November 3rd. Now, last check which was on October 26th, the queue…

Attack Page Mishap

This morning we started getting emails from our regular subscribers letting us know The Blog was coming up as an Attack Page. We even got a couple ‘courtesy emails’ from our hosting provider as well. For most of the morning we worked will Google to identify the issue and remove all the malicious content. We were notified by Google earlier this evening the latest scan came back clean and they would be removing the Attack Page warnings. We are still trying to piece together what happened, but it appears there were only a few posts from earlier this year that…

OpenDownload²

A reader commented about my add-ons screenshot, that I was running OpenDownload 1.0.0 which has not been updates since January 2007 (Firefox 2.0.0.1 was the newest release back then). I’ve been forcing the extension to work either via Nightly Tester Tools or Add-on Compatibility Reporter. Oddly enough, this has worked fine over the last nearly 5-years, especially when so many old extensions broke when Firefox 4 was released this past March. They did point me in the direction of OpenDownload², which is an experimental add-on to replace the original OpenDownload from 2007. OpenDownload² was last updated in April 2011 and…
