Firefox 3.6.6 Released

Mozilla has released the fourth (there was no Firefox 3.6.1 or 3.6.5) update for Firefox 3.6.6 on June 26. This update addressed issues with new plugin handler causing issues with the immensely popular Facebook game Farmville. See bug 574905 for full details. Firefox 3.6.6 modifies the crash protection feature to increase the amount of time that plugins are allowed to be non-responsive before being terminated. Users should be prompted soon to update, but can obtain this update via Help the Menu and selecting Check For Updates…For complete list of changes and more information, please see the Firefox 3.6.6 Release Notes….

A Look At Firefox 3.7a6pre (Minefield)

Had a chance today to download, install and even crash (sort of) Firefox 3.7a6pre aka Minefield. When the final release comes out some time around year end it will be numbered as Firefox 4. The biggest change in Firefox 3.7/4.0 is the user interface (UI). The new UI reminds me a lot of Chrome and takes a little getting use to. Click for full size image This is the ‘default’ UI when you first load up Minefield. Here a few of the notable changes: The ‘Minefield’ Button – In the released version of Firefox 4 this will be labeled as…

There is a reason for that warning!

In my earlier Manually Updating Add-ons to Work post I had added the warning: Forcing an add-on to work can cause unwanted behaviours including browser crash upon start-up. Familiarize yourself on how to use Firefox Safe-Mode. In the course of forcing an install of GreaseMonkey into Firefox 3.7a6pre (Minefield), this caused a major unwanted behaviour thus the reason for that warning. I had already forced several add-ons to work with Minefield. I restarted Minefield to complete the add-ons installation. Everything was going fine at first then suddenly I noticed Minefield kept opening the Greasespot (the official blog of GreaseMonkey) site…

Chrome Conundrums Resolved

Back in January I wrote about a couple Chrome Conundrums. They were how when I had Chrome window maximized I could not get to my hidden taskbar without pressing the Windows Key. Further if the Chrome was the active application (not in the background) my computer and/or monitor would not go into power save/sleep mode. A couple of months ago with one of the ‘silent updates’ of Chrome these issues were resolved. I can now have Chrome open maximized and placing the mouse at the bottom of the screen the Windows Taskbar shows up. Even better I can leave the…

Run Custom Firefox Plugins In Their Own Process

Firefox 3.6.4 has just been released by the developers after a longer than usual wait time. The new version of the web browser comes with out-of-process plugins enabled. This feature basically runs plugins in their own process to increase the stability and security of the browser. By default, only Silverlight, Flash and Quicktime are making use of this feature. Every other plugin is still running in the main Firefox process. The developers have however created an option to add other plugins to the out-of-process plugins list so that they are run in their own process as well…. How 2 with…

No Firefox 4 Beta 1 Today

With the long awaited releases of both Firefox 3.5.10 and Firefox 3.6.4 earlier this week, it seemed as if it were too much to hope for a Firefox 4.0 (formally 3.7) release today. Indeed it was, Mozilla is not going push out the first beta of Firefox 4 today or likely anytime soon. The Mozilla Releases page now has the release date as ‘TBD’. Release Candidate 1 is still scheduled for October 2010.
