Old ‘Status Bar’

There’s an extension for that: Status-4-Evar. I wrote about this handy extension back in January before Mozilla re-did things in Firefox 4 Beta 11 and 12 by putting connection status messages and link targets in an over-lay above the add-on bar. But for those of you who rather have this appear in the ‘status bar’ can do so with this extension. A couple notes, in the toolbars menu it will still be listed as add-on bar. Also, you can still hide/unhide the add-on status bar via CTRL+/.  The extension is only for Firefox 4 and 4.2 (developmental/future Firefox 5).

Important: TenFourFox is not an official Mozilla product and is not an officially sanctioned build of Firefox. Further since this for the Mac I have not able to use this application, nor would I be able to provide any type of support. The reason for this post is to let Mac users who are on OS X 10.4 (or newer) running Power PCs that there is a way to get the new features that come with Firefox 4 and there is an alternative to Safari. TenFourFox is a custom open-source browser built-off of the new Gecko 2 rendering engine and…

More About Firefox 4.2a1pre

As I mentioned earlier, those of us who had been on the nightly builds for Firefox 4 (including both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows) were updated to Firefox 4.2a1pre. I thought that was a rather odd numbering scheme as theoretically the next  version was suppose to Firefox 5. After some research I have determined that 4.2a1pre is a continuation of the nightly builds formerly label as 4.0b13pre. The 4.2 is just a place holder number (much like 3.7, which eventually became 4.0 once in the beta builds) for what will likely be Firefox 5. Now, no official word yet as to…

Firefox 4 Downloads Surpasses IE9 in first 24-Hours

Okay so Microsoft made a big deal how IE9 had about 2.3 million downloads in the first 24-hours.  Firefox 4 in the first 24-hours… over 10 Million downloads. Plus Firefox gained a 2% market share as well. No doubt from all those Windows XP users Microsoft shut-out of IE9. But to be fair, Firefox was also downloaded by Linux and Mac users besides Windows XP, 2000, Server 2003, Vista and 7 users. Microsoft also addressed why it chose to forgo Windows XP support in IE9: The developer community has been vocal that they want to push the Web forward. The…

Force Add-on Compatibility Firefox 4.2a1pre

For those on the Firefox 4 nightly builds the next update appears to be Firefox 4.2a1pre. Now I have no idea how they came up with this numbering as I thought Mozilla was going to be moving on to Firefox 5 next. Of course, Mozilla is known for changing numbering mid-way through development. Firefox 3.1 became Firefox 3.5 and Firefox 3.7 (though never officially labeled) became Firefox 4. While Nightly Tester Tools does work with this new version, the Force Add-on Compatibility feature is not. The good news is it appears the add-ons which are working with Firefox 4 will…
