Microsoft Nagging Windows 10 Users

In a way I kind of find this ironic as back around this time in 2015 Microsoft had started their ‘Nag Campaign‘ to get users of Windows 7 and 8.1 devices to take advantage of the ‘free upgrade’ to Windows 10. As the year progressed Microsoft got more and more aggressive with the Get Windows 10 (GWX) campaign even as going as far as to install malware via KB3035583 a (recommended) Windows Update and changing the behavior of the red X on the upgrade screen in late 2016 (something Microsoft sort of apologized for doing). Word comes now that Microsoft…

X (Twitter) Monthly Fee for All?

Guessing the post read throttling implemented back at the end of June didn’t help with the ‘bot issue’. So now Elon Musk’s next idea is to charge everyone  a small monthly subscription fee. Somehow his logic is this will stop bots in their tracks. Elon Musk has indicated that X, formerly known as Twitter, is considering charging all users for accessing the platform. The X owner said erecting a paywall around the business would ward off the bots, or automated accounts, that have become a bugbear for Musk. That is the lamest excuse I’ve seen. Couldn’t he come up with…

A Surprising Reason Why People Don’t Update Firmware

When it comes to firmware updates some people simply don’t understand the need or process.  However, many people who do understand the need and process, are  getting into the bad habit of NOT installing firmware updates (or the very least allow automatic updates). The reason is surprising: They don’t trust the update. This is nothing new for software updates mainly Windows Updates. People have seen the horror stories on the Internet that a bad Windows Update bricked someone’s computer to the point they had to do a system restore and lost all their data. Now they have a fear that…

Microsoft Confirms End of Windows 10

Not sure which is worse Elon Musk at the helm of Twitter or Microsoft Corporation 417,00 +4,13 +1,00% trying to force people from Windows 10 to Windows 11. On April 27th, Microsoft provided a “Windows client roadmap update” which basically says Windows 10 is now a dead-end and since 22H2 was the last feature update there is nothing to see here. More over, Microsoft’s ‘recommendation’ says “We highly encourage you to transition to Windows 11 now as there won’t be any additional Windows 10 feature updates.”. There’s a couple problems with said recommendation: Many people are unable to ‘transition’ to…

No More New Features for Windows 10

Microsoft has announced the Windows 10 22H2 feature update is the last for Windows 10 (so no Windows 11 23H1 or 23H2). There will still be patches and security updates through the end of life (October 2025) for Window 10, just no new features. Seems I am not the only one in the boat of not liking Windows 11.  Though to be fair, I only worked with it for a few hours. Perhaps it was the laptop, but still even a basic laptop ($500 USD) shouldn’t be chocking on YouTube videos with nothing else open (other than whatever crap Microsft…

RIP Internet Explorer (August 24, 1995-Febraury 14, 2023)

Microsoft Corporation 417,00 +4,13 +1,00% will be putting the final nail in Internet Explorer’s coffin this coming February via a Microsoft Edge (NOT a Windows) update. This will disable Internet Explorer 11 desktop browser on most Windows 10 devices. IE11 was the final version of Internet Explorer initially released with Windows 8.1 in October 2013 and Windows 7 in November 2013. Microsoft introduced their Chromium based browser Microsoft Edge in April 2015 with Windows 10 and Xbox One. “The out-of-support Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop application is scheduled to be permanently disabled on certain versions of Windows 10 devices on February 14,…

Most Windows 11 22H2 Update Holds Removed

While there are still some known issues with the Windows 11 22H2 update, most of the ‘safeguards’ have been removed. The latest safeguard Microsoft Corporation 417,00 +4,13 +1,00% has removed was manly impacting gamers using NVIDIA GeForce GPUs. This issue was resolved with KB5020044 (December Preview Update) which also fixed slow network file copying, but did cause display issues with the task manager for some users (which has now been resolved). The safeguard was removed on December 14th. “This issue was resolved in KB5020044 and the safeguard hold has been removed as of December 14, 2022,” Microsoft said on the Windows Health…

Windows 11 22H2 Task Manager Visibility Issues Resolved

The December 2022 Preview Update for Windows 11 patch (KB5020044) had caused visibility issues with the Windows task manger for users who were not using the “light” or “dark” but rather “custom” color theme. Microsoft Corporation 417,00 +4,13 +1,00% has fixed this issue with this month’s patch (KB5021255) released on Patch Tuesday. No word yet however, what this update might have broken (just kidding…I hope). “This update addresses a known issue that might affect Task Manager. It might display certain elements in the user interface (UI) in unexpected colors. Some parts of the UI might not be readable,” Microsoft explained. “This…
