Back in September it was announced The Firefox Extension Guru’s Home had become a .com. However, the hosting was still on the old ffextensionguru.info domain. Friday evening we switched the primary hosting over to the ffextensionguru.com domain and made .info an alias. Visitors will not notice anything different if they go to either domain as they are both the same. As it stands now, ffextensionguru.info will be going away in July 2011 and the original ffextensiongurublog.info domain in February 2010. To avoid confusion it is best to use http://ffextensionguru.com for The Firefox Extension Guru’s Home and http://blog.ffextensionguru.com for The Firefox…
By default when you open a new tab in Firefox, it opens with a blank tab. In IE7 the default behaviour is to load the users home page in the newly opened tab. The about:config entry browser.tabs.loadOnNewTab is suppose to allow you to choose to have either the browser startup page, blank page (default), Home Page or Last Visited Page open in the new tab. However, this does not work with Firefox, only SeaMonkey. For more on this see bug 269664 for details. The extension New Tab Homepage will load your home page (if you have more than one, then…
A new and updated AMO is coming soon to address complaints from many advanced Firefox users about the ‘inability/difficulty’ to/with installing non-current add-ons with the new AMO 3.2. Plus the Guru discusses some of the other complaints that have surfaced since the release of AMO 3.2.
Actually saw this one on TV the other night along with the Breakthrough [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQx9NXLSNXk]
It seems Yahoo is trying everything they can to keep themselves from being acquired by Microsoft, or at least put pressure on Microsoft to up to the bounty so to say. In the past few weeks, AOL/Time Warner, Google and NewsCorp have entered into the picture. Here is a brief over-view of what is happening with each company. More detailed information can be found here via Todd Bishop’s Microsoft Blog. Yahoo: Trying to avoid or sweeten Microsoft’s original offer. Testing an advertising partnership with Google. Reportedly getting close to a deal with Time Warner’s AOL unit to combine their Internet…

Despite protests, petitions and lobbying to keep Windows XP as an alternative to Vista, Microsoft has announced today they are still planning on phasing out Windows XP on June 30th (which had been extended from January 31st). After this date Windows XP will no longer come pre-installed on most new PC’s. There is however an exception, “ultra-low cost” machines. These include Asus Eee PC, Intel Classmate PC and those PCs generally lack the hardware needed to run Windows Vista. In this case Windows XP will still be available for these machines until June 30, 2010 or one-year after the release…
The Guru is finally having a chance to dig through his Contact Us mailbox. After shoveling out a thick layer of the spam messages, I came across a message from Richard Kershaw, developer of The Domain Lookup Extension. This neat little extension that will allow you to see if a domain name based on the highlighted text is available. Once installed Domain Lookup add-on will add a ‘Domain Lookup for…’ option to the context (right-click) menu. There is also suppose to be a short cut key (CTRL+SHIFT+D) but that does not seem to work as Firefox keeps asking me where…
There has been one feature lacking in Firefox for some time now, the ability to ‘run’ or ‘open’ a downloaded file. The main difference is this file is downloaded to a temporary folder (where it will eventually be deleted) and immediately ran. Firefox allows you to download the file (to your default downloads folder or the folder of your choice) then you have the option to open/run the file. The OpenDownload add-on gives you the functionality like you would fine in Internet Explorer. Depending on what type of file you are downloading you will be presented with one of two…
