Firefox 7.0 Released

Mozilla has released Firefox 7.0 to all users on September 27th, 2011. New stuff in Firefox 7:

  • Drastically improved memory handling for certain use cases
  • Added a new rendering backend to speed up Canvas operations on Windows systems
  • Bookmark and password changes now sync almost instantly when using Firefox Sync
  • The ‘http://’ URL prefix is now hidden by default
  • Added support for text-overflow: ellipsis
  • Added support for the Web Timing specification
  • Enhanced support for MathML
  • The WebSocket protocol has been updated from version 7 to version 8
  • Added an opt-in system for users to send performance data back to Mozilla to improve future versions of Firefox
  • Fixed several stability issues
  • Fixed several security issues

Firefox 6.0.x user can get the update via Help > About Firefox or download it directly here. The next major release will be in another six-weeks on November 8, 2011 with Firefox 8.0 which will be pushed out to the Beta channel later this week.

  1. Just FYI – as of 28-Sept-2011 @10am UTC-4,
    “Help – About Firefox” is showing 6.0.2 as current
    (though the “getfirefox site does indeed download 7.0)

  2. Could be having trouble connecting to the release server. I see no reason why you can not go from 6.0.2 to 7.0 as there are no changes in the system requirements .Is the messages you are seeing is: Firefox is up to date? and You are currently on the release update channel.

  3. Yes to both – I’m on the release channel and it said it is up to date (after the spinning thingy indicating that it was checking).
    I manually updated to 7.0

    Might be something to do with my settings at work machine… I get some funky stuff from time to time on this machine when connected through the network.

  4. I also got the “you client is up to date” when i tried to do the manual check. I was on 6.0.2. I have manually updated now.
