Firefox 8.0.1 Released

Mozilla has pushed out an emergency update to Firefox 8.0.0 on November 21st to select users. This update addressed two top crash bugs in Firefox 8.0.0:

  1. Bug 699134 – RoboForm versions 7.6.2 and OLDER on all platforms crashes Firefox 8.0 – RoboForm 7.6.3 which was just released is fine with Firefox 8.0.
  2. Bug 700835 – Firefox 8 and up crash with Apple’s latest Java updates for OS X 10.6 and 10.7 closing tab/window containing Java applet – Mac Only

Based on the version of Firefox you are currently running and what platform (Windows, Mac or Linux) you are on will determine if you will be offered the update:

Firefox
4.0.x
Firefox
5.0.x
Firefox
6.0.x
Firefox
7.0.x
 Firefox
8.0.x
Windows YES YES YES YES NO
Mac YES YES YES YES YES
Linux YES YES YES YES NO

So, why only the older versions (except for Mac users)? This patch/update disables the RoboForm add-on version 7.6.2 or earlier on any user who is updating to the Firefox 8.0 branch. Since Firefox 8.0 will not run with RoboForm version 7.6.2 or earlier, existing Firefox 8 Windows and Linux users are either already running version 7.6.3 or not using RoboForm at all, making this update unnecessary for them.

Note:  While completely unnecessary, Windows and Linux Firefox 8.0.0 users who want to be on the ‘latest’ version can download and manually installed Firefox 8.0.1 via the getfirefox.com site
