Note: This feature is currently only available on Firefox 6 Aurora (6.0a2). A new feature coming in Firefox 6 (scheduled for release on August 16th) is a about:permissions. About:permissions, like about:config, add-ons, and just about every aspect of Firefox, is all about providing the most highly-customizable browsing experience possible. Type about:permissions into the address bar and you’re presented with a dashboard that lets you configure password retention, geolocation, cookies, pop-ups, and offline storage access on a per-site basis. I decided to take a look at the new Nightly builds for Firefox 7. I created a duplicate of my main profile using the ProfileManager. Everything was going smoothly until Firefox ran the compatibility check on my add-ons. All except the Nightly Tester tools were not compatible and as result disabled. I tried to over-ride the add-on comparability check via some about:config entries. This method had worked fine for Firefox 6 when it was released to Nightly channel. However, after creating the entries for Firefox 7 and restarting Firefox, was not able to bypass the compatibility check. A while back…
Firefox 6 moved from the Nightly to the Aurora channel on May 24th. The Aurora build is a developer’s preview which will allow testers and extension developers to see and work with the new features in Firefox 6. All new features have landed, but features that are not fully functional and stable by the July 7th Beta merge will be removed. What’s new in Firefox 6? mostly ‘under-the-hood’ improvements and these key features: Windows 64-Bit Support (apparently this did not make the cut in Firefox 5) Improvements to the about:memory page New experimental privacy feature called the Data Management Window…
Everything seems to be working fine now. However, every time I restarted Windows my speakers would be disabled. Looking at Playback Devices panel (right click on the speaker icon on the Windows 7 Taskbar and select Playback Devices) I noticed what was happening was Windows was making my HDMI monitor my default playback device. I’d go in and reselect the speakers and even make that ‘Default’ device. However, upon reboot it would revert back to HDMI. I did a batch of Windows updates and after the reboot was back to HDMI being the default playback device. However, while I was…
I am posting this in hopes it will save someone else from the hours of frustration and viewing countless discussion forums on how to fix this fairly simple problem. In my home office I have two separate computer systems one is an off-the-shelf HP computer which runs both Windows Vista and Linux Ubuntu. The other which is my primary was custom built at the end of last year to replace my aging Vista system. I run Windows 7 on this computer. On my primary system I have an Acer H243H 24″ Monitor which has inputs for VGA, DVI and HDMI….
Just Released Firefox 5 Beta – May 20th Schedule this Coming Week Firefox 6 Aurora – May 24th to 31st* Future Releases Firefox 3.6.18 – June 21st Firefox 5 Final Release – June 21st Firefox 6 Beta – July 4th * As part of the new Rapid Release Schedule, dates listed for Aurora and Beta releases are listed as a range. The beginning date is when the code merge is to begin and the end date is the latest this build will be released to that channel. See this post for more details.
Firefox 5 has been moved to the Beta channel on May 20, 2011 (3-days after the May 17th code merge). This build as far as features and changes will be very much similar to the final release due out on June 21st. The name ‘Beta’ may cause some confusion to those who are used to Mozilla’s old release system (Alpha, Beta, Release Candidate). This particular build would fall under the Release Candidate category even though it is labeled as Beta. Development of new features is done and for the most part this build is stable. However, there may still be…
It is still a learning process for the new Firefox rapid release schedule. Earlier this month Mozilla Developer’s News blog explained the difference between the merge and release dates. To sum it up, the dates show on the release page (as well as those posted here) are the date the code is being merged on to the particular channel. The actual release will be around 1-week to allow for testing to ensure the release is stable enough for public consumption. This however only applies to Nightly to Aurora and Aurora to Beta. However, for ‘final releases’, the date listed for…
So last week was the big announcement of Microsoft’s $8.5 billion purchase of Skype. Some people may have forgotten back in 2008, Microsoft bought Danger (the makers of Sidekick) for $500 million. That did not work out as well as Microsoft had hoped as seen by summer 2010 release of the Kin phone (which if you blinked you missed it lasting only 7 weeks on the market). In December Microsoft washed their hands of the Kin Phone. Further the Sidekick brand ended up returning to T-Mobile. Of course there’s the on again, off again talks of acquiring Yahoo! As of…
