Okay, not exactly the kind of toaster that will turn you bread into well toast. ThinkGeek has come out with a USB Toaster hub along with (each sold separately) 4 different pieces of 4-GB USB toast. The whole set is going to cost you $128 USD (plus tax if applicable) with free shipping (if you spend at least $75 USD). I suppose for some people $128 ($28 for the ‘toaster’ and $25 for each piece of ‘toast’) is just pocket change and/or they just find this too cool. Otherwise, you can get much more space for a whole lot less. About a month ago…
Having one of those mornings…was just trying to do some simple updates on the desktop system and opened a can of worms. The newest version of Flash seems to be crashing in Chrome nonstop, but I am hoping a reboot might fix that issue. Did get the JAVA plugins on this machine updated. On this machine I run Thunderbird Beta as my default Thunderbird build, and it updated to Thunderbird 16 Beta when I checked for updates. During the update process I was warned that earlyLight was not compatible and I tried to check for updates, but none were found….
Thunderbird 15 has been released and with that is an update to Lightning to the new 1.7 version which was released a couple days ago. I restarted Thunderbird after the updates and while I had my tasks, I had no calendars. I looked at the add-ons manager and saw I was running Provider for Google Calendar version 0.13 which is the most current release version. I checked under developmental versions and found a link to download the 0.16pre version. Installed this version, restarted and I had my Google Calendars back in Thunderbird. I am not sure if it is the…
With Firefox 15 (due for release later today), the Firefox developers have made great strides in addressing issues that have caused the browser to consume so much memory. Ironically, what has made Firefox so great, the add-ons are the main coluprit behind these memory leaks. he most common cause of these leaks is when an add-on accidentally holds on to extra copies of a web site in memory after our user has closed the tab. These pages pile up, and can eat massive amounts of memory for no user benefit. They leak. In the newest Firefox release, we developed a mechanism to prevent…

Brain R Bondy has posted an update on the status of Firefox for Windows 8 Metro Modern User Interface. There is quite a bit of progress in getting Firefox adapted to run in this unique Windows 8 interface: Crash reporting pdfjs (Built in PDF viewer without the need for a plugin) Windowless Flash, although full screen flash doesn’t work yet Some accessibility hooks Front end event refactoring to be faster and to treat mouse input normally and distinct from touch input File pickers updated to be asynchronous on all platforms because it was needed for WinRT Front end awesomescreen work…
Mozilla announced earlier today they have added older (older than 5.1.0) versions of Microsoft’s Silverlight Plugin to the Plugins blocklist for Mac OS X (no word yet if this will be extended to include Windows users). Unlike the recent JAVA plugin blocking, this plugin block is not due to a security volunerabitly. Instead, these older versions of Silverlight are causing stability issues including crahses on Microsoft’s Hotmail site. Users are urged to check to ensure they are running a more recent version of Silverlight (as well as other plugins such as JAVA and Flash/Shockwave) and check the status of their…
A while back we mentioned that Firefox was working on getting a Windows 8 Metro Modern User Interface prototype going. There are some ‘internal builds’ that have been completed, but so far no Alpha or Beta release. This topic came up on Sunday in the Firefox Build forums today as a beta users was looking for the Windows 8 builds of Firefox and then also trying to get the Windows 8 Metro Modern UI of IE10 working. Turns out in Windows 8 you can only have one browser using the Modern UI in Windows 8. Further, this browser needs to be your…
