Attack Page Mishap

This morning we started getting emails from our regular subscribers letting us know The Blog was coming up as an Attack Page. We even got a couple ‘courtesy emails’ from our hosting provider as well. For most of the morning we worked will Google to identify the issue and remove all the malicious content. We were notified by Google earlier this evening the latest scan came back clean and they would be removing the Attack Page warnings. We are still trying to piece together what happened, but it appears there were only a few posts from earlier this year that…

Firefox 8 Coming/What’s New

As noted in yesterday’s Firefox Release Recap, Firefox 8 will be released on Tuesday, November 8th. There are several new features coming in this release and there are couple that really standout. These include additions to the add-ons installation and management process as well as only allowing tabs to load when selected upon restart. Add-ons check first run On your first run after you have updated to Firefox 8, you are going to see an add-ons screen similar to that below. This will let you know which add-ons are currently installed, if they are compatible (or can be updated) and…

Release Recap Updates

We are now a couple months into Mozilla’s new Rapid Release process where new versions are scheduled for release every six-weeks. As such I’ve decided to change the frequency in which the Release Recaps are posted. In a given 6-week period, 2 weekly updates contain new information, while the other 4 updates are just ‘place holder’ posts with no new information. So, effective from this point forward the Release Recaps will only be posted the Saturdays prior to and after the releases. So, the next release date is November 8th, therefore the next Release Recaps will be on November 5th…

Wiki Improvements

Some of you may have noticed we made a slight change to the color scheme on the FF Extension Guru Wiki. We had noticed the links were not visible and have since made them more visible.  We have also made the following improvements: Search widget is now at the top of the page instead of down in the footer. Removed old Links section. Links to Browser & Clients and Open-Source Software are now in the footer. Resource page has been completely redesigned.  There are now links to current, past and developmental Firefox releases. Also provided links to support forums and…

Facebook Page Updates

Due to us moving the blog to the new server (which we did because we moved to a more enhanced blog platform) updates to the Facebook Firefox Page were not getting posted. After much research on the WordPress side to find a plugin which would post both to the Facebook Page as well as our Twitter Feed we did not find any that would work reliably. However, we did find twitterfeed a free service that will feed your blog(s) to Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. Feeds from both this blog as was as The Email Mafia (Thunderbird) Blog…

Firefox for Mobile

While we did say that we had ‘no big plans’ for this year we are launching a new category, Firefox for Mobile. This category is going to be reserved for release and support information as well as extension reviews for the Firefox for Mobile browser aka Fennec. We have also created a ‘mobile friendly’ version of the blog at http://blog.ffextensionguru.mobi. For added convenience there is a mobile barcode link on the sidebar.  Please note: content is automatically transferred from the traditional blog to the mobile friendly blog. However, there may be up to an 1-hour delay in new content appearing on…

Happy Birthday to Us!

On May 1, 2006, a blog was born. The Firefox Extension Guru’s Blog that is. We debuted on Blogger but within a few months moved over to WordPress. The big Firefox news back in 2005 was the upcoming Firefox 2.0 due out later that year as well as the collapse of an anti-spam extension and the decision not to include Places in Firefox 2. I was never really sure if the blog would last, but it has continued to grow. Currently averages around 1500 views per day. That did peak to nearly 3000 views on they day of and following…

Wiki Updated

When I brought the Wiki over at the beginning of the year, I didn’t do much with it other than get it setup on the WordPress platform. It had been moved from MediaWiki, which is the same platform that Wikipedia uses. The main issues I had with MediaWiki was having to re-learn their coding every time I went to make an update (which was not that frequently). Since the updates to the content were not that frequent I didn’t want to hassle with trying to move to a new platform. That was until I did  a software update towards the…

…and we’re live!

I should know better than to try to make hosting changes over a weekend. Everyone else, so things that should normally go through say in a couple hours take a lot longer. I checked earlier and saw ffextensionguru.info was now showing the new blog so I decided to check blog.ffextensionguru.com. Well what da ya know it works! I also was able to have all traffic which went to the old ffextensionguru.wordpress.com URL automagically redirected to the new blog (for $12 a year). This is also good for SEO as well as the tons of links I have out on forums….
