I’ve been wanting to make the move to the self hosted WordPress for a while now. Unfortunately, the hosting service which is included in my reseller package at my current provider is not optimized to handle WordPress. This was kind the reason I was keeping the package with them was the hosting and some other ‘freebies’ I was getting. Towards the end of last year I noticed I really wasn’t using these free items anymore. I happened to get a hold of a very good discount which allowed me to get a new 3-years hosting package for less than I…

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health: The Blog-Health-o-Meter™ reads Wow. Crunchy numbers A helper monkey made this abstract painting, inspired by your stats. The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 250,000 times in 2010. If it were an exhibit at The Louvre Museum, it would take 11 days for that many people to see it. In 2010, there were 174 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 1312 posts. The…
Recently there has been a fake Firefox update page (see below) has been floating around the web. This page not only tells the user they are running an out-dated version of Firefox, but that they need to update Adobe Flash Player as well. There is a link to “update” Adobe Flash Player but this is actually a malicious link: The download starts automatically. Save and run it and you get a rogue antivirus product named “SecurityTool” which starts finding threats which aren’t there and demanding payment in order to remove them. With the recent increase in Firefox updates (especially for…
Mozilla has released the third (there was no Firefox 3.6.1) update for Firefox 3.6.4 on June 22. This update is the first with the plugin handler (like that of Google Chrome). Firefox 3.6.4 provides uninterrupted browsing for Windows and Linux users when there is a crash in the Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins. Users should be prompted soon to update, but can obtain this update via Help the Menu and selecting Check For Updates… For complete list of changes and more information, please see the Firefox 3.6.4 Release Notes. Next up is Firefox 3.6.6 scheduled for around the…
The Firefox Extension Guru is now on Facebook and Twitter (#ffextensionguru). The majority of the posts on both are going to be the blog feed but we may add exclusive content on our Facebook page from time to time. Firefox Extension Guru
Today, The Firefox Extension Guru’s Blog turns 4! This is also our first full year since we split off Thunderbird content to our sister blog, The Email Mafia. Finally, new this year is our second author Gareon. Gareon posts Firefox news items every once in item. The Firefox stuff I really want to post but just don’t have the time to do while crashing…breaking…I mean testing Firefox builds and extensions.
Over the past four years since this blog was started, we have posted various Add-ons Compilations or ‘collections’ of add-ons with a common theme. With nearly 1200 posts and nearly 200 of those in the ‘Add-ons’ category it can be somewhat difficult to locate these collections. To solve this issue, we have now added a new section to The Firefox Extension Guru’s Wiki. Introducing the Add-on Compilations, a complete list of all the collections that have been mentioned on the blog.
When I started this blog nearly 5-years ago I would have no idea how much it would grow. I spend a lot of my time breaking testing Firefox and many of the posts lately have been more technical or release news related. I am still quite active over on Go Firefox! and have been seeing a lot great news items being posted over there. I keep making notes to myself to post those articles on the blog, but just either get too caught up working on something else or just don’t have the time. I’ve known Gareon for some time…
As mentioned last week on the Changes Coming to Our Main Site post, we’ve been upgrading our existing site. We are please to announce the first two sections of The Firefox Extension Guru’s Wiki are now live! So far the Tips & Tricks section of the main site has been migrated over to the Wiki. Also, most of the tweaks have been migrated over as well. Yes, most of the tweaks. This was because there were a few tweaks that really only applied to the early builds of Firefox 2. Most of the fixes provided by those tweaks were implemented…
You would think Microsoft would have learned its lesson after all the negative backlash with the Microsoft .NET Spyware Extension. But this is Microsoft we are talking about. Earlier today I got an odd pop-up window from Firefox: The Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in has been disabled for your protection. Several people on Go Firefox! have reported getting the same message. From what I have read this plug-in that allows the embedding of XAML applications (an XML-based UI technology) in web pages, called XBAP and is part of the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced a security hole was…
