Adblock Plus to start allowing ‘non-intrusive ads’

Ads on websites are a bit of a touchy subject. Sites do need money to stay ‘alive’ and advertising (and in our case as well donations) helps pay the bills. However, there is a limit to what can be consider acceptable. Small non-intrusive text (or even image based) ads are good. Pop-ups, pop-unders and Flash based ads are what can be consider intrusive. Starting with Adblock Plus (ABP) 2.0 for Firefox and Chrome, ‘non-intrusive ads’ will be shown by default. This can be turned off via the ABP preferences and if your are using a ‘privacy’ filter, those ads likely…

Firefox 8.0.1, Mac & Java Crashes Update

Looks like the developers are making some progress in getting the Java Applet based crashes with Firefox 8.0.1 on Mac under control. The latest news on bug 705931 is the crashes have stopped by increasing the default plugin cache size from ’10’ to ’50’. They are having other users testing this out before a patch is posted. If patch is successful, I am not certain if it is going to be pushed out to Mac users as firedrill release (Firefox 8.0.2) or part of the Firefox 9.0 release on December 20th. This is a ‘critical’ bug as sites with Java…

Ubuntu will now track Mozilla updates

The Ubuntu developers are now tracking Mozilla’s rapid release cycle, releasing the updated version 8.0 of Mozilla’s Firefox and Thunderbird. Previously, Ubuntu distributions would have stuck with the major version they were released with, say 3.0, and only updated to the minor versions as they arrived, 3.0.1, 3.0.2 and so on… “ More  The H Open Source: News and Features ↑Go get it↓

Firefox 8.0.1: JAVA & Mac Crashes Continue

I knew it seemed like things were a bit too quiet. Turns out, the email stopped working Wednesday night or Thursday morning.  Last night I started getting some emails on Bug 701537 (Tracking bug for build and release of Firefox 8.0.1). The first was the addition (and shortly there after the deletion) of dependency on Bug 705931 ([Mac] Firefox 8.0.1 crashes when many Java applets are loaded). Reading into Bug 701537, I noticed several comments from November 25th that I never got the notification emails on. Anyway, long story short, there is still an outstanding Bug (seems the finger is…

Not much news

Not sure if folks are still recovering from ODing on Turkey over the long weekend or given today is Cyber Monday, but not much news on the Firefox front. Even at today’s Mozilla Weekly meeting, not much to report. The only thing worth mentioning for this meeting is eligible Firefox 3.6 users will be offered an update to Firefox 8.0.1 later this week. Unless something changes this is scheduled for Thursday, December 1st.

Unhide Forward Button

For whatever reason, Mozilla has decided starting with Firefox 11 to hide the forward button when you can not go forward. For once, this is not something that Mozilla has copied from Google Chrome, as the forward button is always displayed in Chrome. I suppose for people running very low resolutions (640×480, 800×600, etc), the extra space is welcomed. However, you are not really gaining any space as once you can go forward, the forward button reappears and the address bar is shifted to the right. When you can not go forward the ‘forward’ button is hidden. The ‘forward button’…

More Default Favicon Choices

In the Replace Firefox Default Favicon post we mentioned a couple User Scripts by Rob64Rock that allowed you to replace the new (and unimproved) default Favicon (now a dashed square) for pages and bookmark that did not have a Favicon. This past weekend I received an email asking if was possible to use the Aurora or Nightly logo with the Firefox Branding Logo as Favicon script on Firefox 8. I contacted Rob64Rock and he sent me the link to scripts he has created which will use the Aurora or Nightly logo as the default Favicon regardless of which version of…
