Firefox has finally caught up to Chrome when it comes to opening a new tab. In Chrome you are presented with thumbnails of sites you have visited prior. While there have been some extensions that have duplicated this feature, it is now part of the native Firefox UI in both the latest Nightly (13.0a1) and Aurora (12.0a2) builds. Note: it will be available for a limited time on the Aurora builds, see * at the end of this post for more details. Below is a sample from Percy’s (mozilla links) review: Keep in mind this is still a work in…
Ads on websites are a bit of a touchy subject. Sites do need money to stay ‘alive’ and advertising (and in our case as well donations) helps pay the bills. However, there is a limit to what can be consider acceptable. Small non-intrusive text (or even image based) ads are good. Pop-ups, pop-unders and Flash based ads are what can be consider intrusive. Starting with Adblock Plus (ABP) 2.0 for Firefox and Chrome, ‘non-intrusive ads’ will be shown by default. This can be turned off via the ABP preferences and if your are using a ‘privacy’ filter, those ads likely…
For whatever reason, Mozilla has decided starting with Firefox 11 to hide the forward button when you can not go forward. For once, this is not something that Mozilla has copied from Google Chrome, as the forward button is always displayed in Chrome. I suppose for people running very low resolutions (640×480, 800×600, etc), the extra space is welcomed. However, you are not really gaining any space as once you can go forward, the forward button reappears and the address bar is shifted to the right. When you can not go forward the ‘forward’ button is hidden. The ‘forward button’…
A regular on Go Firefox! had been having some issues with Firefox 8 crashing when using Google, specifically when clicking images. After some trial error of restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled and re-enabling them one at a time (the best way to find a troublesome add-on) they determined the troublemaker was ironically OptimizeGoogle 0.79 add-on. After a little for digging I noticed this version was release on October 26th. However, in the version history section of the AMO page I noticed a version 0.79.1 submitted for review on November 3rd. Now, last check which was on October 26th, the queue…
For the longest time I had used the Weather Bug extension as I was a subscriber to their Windows desktop widget. However, once Firefox 4 was released the extension stopped working. For a long while their website said they were working on getting it operational for Firefox 4 and newer. Finally though, they announced they were dropping the extension. So I started looking for another Weather extension. I wanted something that was low profile and customizable. After looking around AMO, I came across Forecastfox Weather, powered by Accuweather.com. There are a lot of things about this add-on that impress me….
I don’t use the toolbar but I do use this and it may come in handy for those who do.I didn’t realize how many services Google had. Display all Google services as buttons or as a space-saving dropdown menu next to your address bar or anywhere you like it. Reach services like Gmail, Google reader, Google maps, Google calendar, and many more in a single click from your browser. Google has canceled its toolbar for the current and future versions of Firefox, and Mozilla is scrambling to help users who might be left in the lurch and postponing their browser upgrades…”…
Lot of stuff available with this. I had no idea there were this many services available.I’ve only just started tweaking it but am liking it already for the easy access to my Google site and mail. Quickest change I’ve ever made. đŸ™‚Installed the script before I ever used Google for search though I did see the black nav bar briefly and could hardly read it. Change Google Navigation Bar (the bar at the top of Google page) to a light (white) classic style, or colorize it as you like. “ Script Google Light Navbar for Greasemonkey Found @ GHacks.net Go get it.
Update: First off thanks for the comments. Looks like I missed something, like the fact that I was running Firefox 7 Nightly maximized. Normally I only have the browser window only partial of the screen-width. But this does bring up an interesting question, why not have everything on one row even if the browser window is not maximized? The first screenshot while a partial screen size, is almost 800 pixels wide which would be for those running 800×600 would be maximized. Just seems like wasted space in that title bar. While I was trying out the different versions of Firefox…
On February 10, 2010, Mozilla released Firefox 3.7 Alpha 1. Yes, that is correct version number 3.7. Since it was still being built on the Gecko 1.9 rendering engine and was supposed to be an update to Firefox 3.6 (features/changes that were not ready in time for Firefox 3.6 would be implemented into this version). So here we are a little under two-weeks from the anniversary of this release. So what happened in the past year? Let’s see the numbering (and purpose) was changed to Firefox 4 when the first Beta on the Gecko 2.0 rendering engine was released back…
