No Google Browser Sync For Fx 3

Personally, I have never used the Google Browser Sync extension (or anything of Google’s) but I know a lot of folks have. Bad news for you folks, Google has decided to ditch the Google Browser Sync extension.  This means it is not going to made available for Firefox 3 and at the end of the year when Firefox 3.1 comes out and 2.0 is retired, Google will stop all support for the extension. Here’s some information via Lifehacker Thanks for trying out Google Browser Sync and for all of your feedback. It was a tough call, but we decided to…

Microsoft/Yahoo: The End

After over 5 1/2 months the Microsoft/Yahoo saga has finally come to an end. In a press release from June 12th Yahoo announced: Yahoo! Inc. … today announced that discussions with Microsoft regarding a potential transaction — whether for an acquisition of all of Yahoo! or a partial acquisition — have concluded. The conclusion of discussions follows numerous meetings and conversations with Microsoft regarding a number of transaction alternatives, including a meeting between Yahoo! and Microsoft on June 8th in which Chairman Roy Bostock and other independent Board members from Yahoo! participated. At that meeting, Microsoft representatives stated unequivocally that…

Adventures in Safe Mode

You will notice in several places I have this disclaimer/warning: WARNING! The Firefox Extension Guru is an independent beta-tester and is not affiliated with Mozilla Corporation. While most of these tips, tricks, suggestions, etc. are relatively simple to do, there is still a risk of damaging your profile.  Therefore these are recommended for advanced Firefox users and should be attempted at your own risk! There is good reason for this as I am about to explain with my Adventure in Safe Mode today. I have spent most…

Yahoo & Microsoft or Time Warner or Google or…

It seems Yahoo is trying everything they can to keep themselves from being acquired by Microsoft, or at least put pressure on Microsoft to up to the bounty so to say. In the past few weeks, AOL/Time Warner, Google and NewsCorp have entered into the picture. Here is a brief over-view of what is happening with each company. More detailed information can be found here via Todd Bishop’s Microsoft Blog. Yahoo: Trying to avoid or sweeten Microsoft’s original offer. Testing an advertising partnership with Google. Reportedly getting close to a deal with Time Warner’s AOL unit to combine their Internet…

The Future of Yahoo!

Last week Microsoft made an unsolicited offer to acquire Yahoo! with an initial asking price of $31/per share which was about 62% higher than the January 31st closing price. On Wednesday, Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang sent an internal e-mail seeking to keep the company’s employees focused on its strategy despite the uncertainty created by Microsoft’s unsolicited acquisition bid. Also on Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that a merger involving Yahoo! and Google would be unlikely due to anti-trust (only Microsoft can get away with anti-trust, at least in the US) and regulatory concerns. To add even more mystery to…

Google Sued for $5 Billion

We’ve all seen our fair share of stupid law suits, but this one has to be the best. It seems Dylan Jayne who lives in Pennsylvania is suing Google because their name (along with the Philadelphia 76er’s) are similar to his Social Security Number. He claims that flipping his SSN number upside down, and scrambling it around you will see the similarity. Oh but wait it gets even better…Jayne has hand-written his civil complaint against Google. I am guessing he couldn’t find a lawyer willing to take his idiotic case much less against a major corporation such as Google. But…

Google: “Vista’s Desktop Search Program Anti-Trust Violation!”

Found this interesting item on Todd Bishop’s Blog. It seems the Desktop Search program which comes with Vista does not play well with Google’s own Desktop Search. Especially when the two are running simultaneously . This is causing the user’s system to slow to a crawl. Further unlike Vista’s Start-Up Sound this search feature can not be disabled. Here’s the interesting thing though, Google launched the complaint late last year but Microsoft Lawyer’s would not reveal the source of the complaint. Even in March of this year, “Plaintiffs reported that they had just received a middleware-related complaint.” But again it…

Yahoo Maps & Fx Nightlies

While reading Wladimir Palant’s (Adblock Plus author) blog about the improvements in ad blocking with the future Firefox 2.0.0.4 build, I came across this interesting piece of information about Yahoo Maps & Fx Nightlies: Finally, Yahoo Maps uses browser sniffing that causes it to behave strangely in Firefox nightlies. To “fix” go to about:config, find the preference general.useragent.extra.firefox and replace “BonEcho” by “Firefox”. So what exactly does “behave strangely in Firefox nightlies” mean? Take a look at these screen shots below (opens a new tab) with general.useragent.extra.firefox set to: Firefox BonEcho/2.0.0.4pre I had stopped using Yahoo! Maps because it did…
