Starting with a Fresh Profile

Updated 03/09/2013: Removed references to now defunct Personas Themes. Updated 11/16/2011: Added info for backup and restore of Greasemonkey and Stylish scripts. Also added new step in the Starting Over section. If you’ve been using the same profile since Firefox 3.6  (or older) you may run into performance issues with newer versions of Firefox. In the case of Firefox 8, some users have reported the browser is very unstable. This can be caused by bad/out-dated extensions and/or a damaged profile. With a new profile you are starting over from scratch with Firefox at its ‘factory default’ settings. However, you can bring…

While the add-on says it will work for Firefox 9, it does not work correctly in the Beta 1 release. The Mark As Read option does not work. There is developmental version, 1.6b1 that is suppose to work better with Firefox 6 and newer. There has been some upgrades to the UI in this version as well. To update to 1.6b1: Go to Brief on AMO Scroll to the…

OptimizeGoogle 0.79 & Firefox 8.0

A regular on Go Firefox! had been having some issues with Firefox 8 crashing when using Google, specifically when clicking images. After some trial error of restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled and re-enabling them one at a time (the best way to find a troublesome add-on) they determined the troublemaker was ironically OptimizeGoogle 0.79 add-on. After a little for digging I noticed this version was release on October 26th. However, in the version history section of the AMO page I noticed a version 0.79.1 submitted for review on November 3rd. Now, last check which was on October 26th, the queue…

Attack Page Mishap

This morning we started getting emails from our regular subscribers letting us know The Blog was coming up as an Attack Page. We even got a couple ‘courtesy emails’ from our hosting provider as well. For most of the morning we worked will Google to identify the issue and remove all the malicious content. We were notified by Google earlier this evening the latest scan came back clean and they would be removing the Attack Page warnings. We are still trying to piece together what happened, but it appears there were only a few posts from earlier this year that…

Firefox 8 Inverted (White) Toolbar Icons

Another change in Firefox 8 which was not very well documented is with small icons on dark Personas and glass is the icons are inverted (white). Also this applies to the default theme if Tabs on Top is turned off. This was as a result of Bug 671553. Normal Icons Inverted Icons I have created a Stylish Script that will un-invert the icons. However, it does not restore the actual button or glow effect though on some Personas.

Lightning Updates for Developmental Thunderbird Builds

Important: At least in the Thunderbird 11 Daily builds, you will need to manually update Lightning by going the the Calendar Versions page then down and install the correct version. As mentioned earlier this week Mozilla Lightning, the Thunderbird Calendar add-on had been updated for Thunderbird 8. The Calendar Versions page on MDN now shows new versions (with an entirely new numbering scheme) of Lightning for the upcoming (channel merges are still in progress) Thunderbird 9 Beta, Thunderbird 10 Earlybird and Thunderbird 11 Daily builds. As odd as the old numbering scheme was, it did sort of make sense (compared…

Disable Firefox Add-on Controls

Note: This article may be updated in the coming days as we learn more about the new add-on controls in Firefox 8. As mentioned earlier this week, Firefox 8 introduced some new Add-on Controls that were designed more for single users. These incldued the ability to review and disable user installed add-ons on the first run of Firefox 8 as well as automatically disabling any 3rd party installed add-ons.
