Fx 2.0.0.5 Released with Fix for firefoxurl:// Exploit

Mozilla has released Firefox 2.0.0.5, a security upgrade. From mozillaZine.org:   Firefox 2.0.0.5 includes a fix for firefoxurl:// security exploit, which allows an attacker to use Microsoft Internet Explorer to trick Firefox into executing malicious code. Whether Firefox or IE is responsible for the flaw has been a matter of debate over the past week. The Mozilla Foundation security advisory about the firefoxurl:// issue maintains that it’s a problem in IE and notes that other applications could be exploited in the same way. Others have argued that it’s Firefox’s responsibility to vet incoming data (something 2.0.0.5 now does). You should…

Microsoft’s Ad(ware) Patent

Well, the big-wigs at Microsoft are at it again. As if tracking cookies weren’t bad enough, Microsoft has recently filed a patent that would ” look at what’s on your hard drive and serve you targeted advertisements based on that data.” The patent application notes that the software in question could be a part of Windows or a stand-alone app: An advertising framework may reside on a user computer, whether it’s a part of the OS, an application or integrated within applications. Applications, tools, or utilities may use an application program interface to report context data tags such as key…

Netscape 9.0b2 Released

The next milestone in the Netscape 9.0 series, Beta 2 was release late last week. Netscape 9.0 is based off of Firefox 2.0.0.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5pre) Gecko/20070710 Firefox/2.0.0.4 Navigator/9.0b2). I have used Netscape 8 in the past and had found it to be very unstable, so I was not sure what to expect with Netscape 9. I played with it for a couple hours this morning and much to my surprise it was very stable (never even crashed 🙁 ), even on Delphi Forums where some ads would cause Netscape 8 to crash. Being Netscape…

Review: Interclue

The Guru is getting popular! I’ve had two extension review requests in the past couple days. Today’s extension review is Interclue, “an extensive and polished new add-on that brings you link summaries, link context information and useful next action icons inside a handy tooltip window that turns up when you want it, not when you least expect it.” Unlike Snap Shots, it provides more than just a preview of the link. With Interclue you get a preview plus ‘clues’. These ‘clues’ include statics such as number of words, links and files contained within the document. In addition there is (optional)…

Review: Snap Shots

Note: If you are using a Nightly or other custom builds of Firefox you will need to make a change in your about:config in order to be allowed to download this add-on. Change general.useragent.extra.firefox preference from Bon Echo (or whatever your build is called) to Firefox. Once you have installed the add-on you can get safely reset that preference. Snap allows you to see preview or a ‘snap-shot’ of the link target when you hover over a link. WordPress has been using Snap for a while now and it is one of those features you either like or hate. I…

Fx 2.0 Close Tab Buttons Revisited

It has been nearly 9 months since I originally posted the Firefox 2.0: Close Tab Buttons tweak and still it is the top viewed and commented post. Making this adjustment is the first thing I do when I setup a new profile as having the button on every tab is just too much. I have setup a poll and discussion on the The Firefox Extension Guru’s Forum about this very topic. Come join in.

You Want to Cancel AOL?

They CyberNet Blog has a really good article today, What Was Your Experience Cancelling AOL?.  I have had my own experience and when I use to work for a credit card company have heard many of horror stories.  It took me nearly a month to cancel an account I never activated.  Several phone calls kept yielding more free months offers but never a cancellation.  I found the best way to cancel AOL is accept an offer, wait for the confirmation letter, complete the form on the back and then either FAX or mail (be sure to make a copy as…
