[Part 1][Part 2][Part 3][Part 3.5][Part 4][Part 4.5] It has now been a week since the Add-Ons Manager Overhaul (AMO) was suppose to be live. The latest news from the Mozilla Webdev Blog is AMO Deployment This Week. The AMO both with the multiple locals as well as the amount of traffic has brought multiple challenges as well as set backs for the final launch: Scalability of our new site has been a unique challenge for us. We are trying to tackle localization for a large number of locales for both static and dynamic data, which is something not many sites…

Earlier this week Google announced they have opened their Gmail e-mail service to all. In the past you either had to know someone who could send you an invitation or more recently be able to receive a confirmation /activation registration code via a cell phone text message. This announcement spawned an interesting discussion on the CyberNet Forums, Gmail finally really open to everyone!!!!. It is noteworthy to point out that many people say Gmail has the best spam filter of most web based e-mail services, but now that it is open to all what is to stop spammers from creating…
I came across this amazing story earlier today on CyberNet. Aaron Stanton has this novel idea (which he has not disclosed to us the reader, yet) which he is sure Google is going to love. Since 2003 he has thought about flying out to Mountain View, California to the Googleplex to present the idea. He has come close many times, but has always backed out at the last second. Finally this past Sunday, February 11th he made the trip to California. He brought along his video camera, laptop and the presentation for his idea in multiple formats (Mac, Windows, and…
Firefox, especially if you have lots of extensions, does take sometime to start up. There are times I wonder is it loading? So I click the icon again thinking may be it didn’t work the first time around. Then I end up with Fx opened up in two windows. This is not a big deal, I just closed the extra browser window. Then I discovered a simple and customizable solution, the Splash extension. When you start Firefox a “Splash” (loading) screen will appear when Firefox is starting up. The default image is taken from the graphic that is displayed on…
[Part 1][Part 2][Part 3][Part 3.5][Part 4][Part 4.5] Just a quick update (thus the pt 3.5) on the status of the Firefox Add-on Overhaul. Some good news from the Mozilla Webdev Blog in response to a complaint (not mine) in regards to the lack of an Advanced Search feature: “fwenzel@mozilla.com Says: February 14th, 2007 at 10:37 pm …Advanced search is on our list, and will come back.” You can take a look at the preview site, but just keep in mind that this is a work in progress and due to the issues discussed in the Mozilla Webdev Blog, the site…
A recent Vulnerability involving Fx 2.0.0.1 (and possibly 1.5.0.* builds) has been exposed. The vulnerability (Bug 370445) could allow a malicious web site to impersonate an authentic one and set a cookie on its behalf. Due to Fx 2.0.0.2 already in RC status and due out in a few days, plus the bug is still being worked it is doubtful this will be fixed in this upcoming build. Likely we will see this fixed in Fx 2.0.0.3 (and if affects the 1.5.0.X builds, 1.5.0.11). In the mean time you can apply this simple fix via about:config… In a new tab,…
The other day an e-mail came into the Blog’s tips mailbox from Ken Saunders. Ken is an administrator for Spread Firefox and was inviting me to submit a review and join the Add-ons Promotion Contest. The timing of this e-mail invitation is a bit ironic as I was just discussing in the Firefox Add-ons Overhaul Pt 3 about the reviews options as part of the new Firefox Add-On site. The advertisement above gives the basic details of the contest and full details (rules, prizes, etc) can be found at Spread Firefox: Add-Ons Promotion Contest. I have entered the contest with…
Mitchell Baker, CEO of Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Foundation, has released a draft version of the Mozilla Manifesto, a declaration of principles and ways the Mozilla project as a whole follows and the goals it pursues. Part of the Mozilla Manifesto are 10 Principles that Mozilla “…believes are critical for the Internet to continue to benefit the public good as well as commercial aspects of life.” I am not going to list or discuss all 10 of the principles. However, #5 really stood out: “Individuals must have the ability to shape their own experiences on the Internet.” I strongly believe…
For some odd reason there was a Gecko 1.9/Grand Paradiso meeting on Tuesday (2007/02/13). In the meeting notes there is a brief mention that the Fx 3 developers are targeting (still have some bugs to work out) to have Places in place for the Alpha 3 release due out sometime next month. Permalink
[Part 1][Part 2][Part 3][Part 3.5][Part 4][Part 4.5] This is part 3 of my multi-part series on the Firefox Add-ons Overhaul. At the bottom of the Part 2 entry I had added this update: Update: The “preview” site is a work in progress and has actually been up (and down) for several weeks. The current extension list is NOT all inclusive, more may be added prior to the final release. Since this post, the preview site has been updated and nearly all the extensions I had mentioned prior as being removed/missing are now included in the preview site. They have also…
