Disable Addon Compatibility Checking Fx 7

I mentioned in the Add-on Compatibility Reporter post, I had installed Firefox 7 Nightly but was having trouble getting the addon comparability ‘safe-guard’ turned off via an about:config tweak as I had in the past for other developmental builds. Girish Mony commented for those who just want to disable the compatibility checking add the following Boolean entry and set it to false: extensions.checkCompatibility.nightly This only works for Firefox 7 Nightly builds. Not sure what is going to happen when Firefox 7 moves to the Aurora channel on July 5th.

Fake Firefox warnings lead to scareware

Purveyors of fake security software don’t let much grass grow under their feet and continually make improvements to their social engineering lures. While most of the talk for the past month has been their move to Mac with fake Finder pop-ups that appear to scan your computer, they haven’t stopped innovating on Windows either… May 30, 2011 More Fake Firefox warnings lead to scareware | Naked Security Go get it.

Thunderbird Numbering Changing

While trying to get some updated info on the next release of Thunderbird 3.3 (Miramar) I came across a thread in the Thunderbird Builds forum discussing the numbering change. Simply put, the Thunderbird developers want to have the version numbering match that of Firefox/Gecko. It also sounds as if Thunderbird is going to be following in Firefox footsteps with it’s own rapid release cycle. So the following numbering changes will be taking effect soon: Thunderbird 3.3 (Miramar) >> Thunderbird 5 Builds which will be produced from comm-aurora >> Thunderbird 6 Thunderbird Nightly (3.4a1pre) >> Thunderbird 7 For those who are…

Clear Cache & Cookies – The Easy Way

One question I tend to get a lot is ‘How Do I Clear My Cache and Cookies in Firefox?‘.  I will give Microsoft kudos for making this process fairly simple (three steps) in Internet Explorer 9. Mozilla, on the other hand has made the process fairly complicated (more so with the newer Firefox versions). To get to the Clear All History window where you can select to clear cache, cookies and other data: Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4 on Windows XP: Tools > Options > Privacy Tab >Link: clear your recent history. Firefox 4 on Windows Vista and 7: Firefox…

about:permissions

Note: This feature is currently only available on Firefox 6 Aurora (6.0a2). A new feature coming in Firefox 6 (scheduled for release on August 16th) is a about:permissions. About:permissions, like about:config, add-ons, and just about every aspect of Firefox, is all about providing the most highly-customizable browsing experience possible. Type about:permissions into the address bar and you’re presented with a dashboard that lets you configure password retention, geolocation, cookies, pop-ups, and offline storage access on a per-site basis. Add-on Compatibility Reporter

I decided to take a look at the new Nightly builds for Firefox 7. I created a duplicate of my main profile using the ProfileManager. Everything was going smoothly until Firefox ran the compatibility check on my add-ons. All except the Nightly Tester tools were not compatible and as result disabled. I tried to over-ride the add-on comparability check via some about:config entries. This method had worked fine for Firefox 6 when it was released to Nightly channel.  However, after creating the entries for Firefox 7 and restarting Firefox, was not able to bypass the compatibility check. A while back…

Firefox 6.0a2 (Aurora) now Available

Firefox 6 moved from the Nightly to the Aurora channel on May 24th. The Aurora build is a developer’s preview which will allow testers and extension developers to see and work with the new features in Firefox 6. All new features have landed, but features that are not fully functional and stable by the July 7th Beta merge will be removed. What’s new in Firefox 6? mostly ‘under-the-hood’ improvements and these key features: Windows 64-Bit Support (apparently this did not make the cut in Firefox 5) Improvements to the about:memory page New experimental privacy feature called the Data Management Window…

Adventures with HDMI Part 2

Everything seems to be working fine now. However, every time I restarted Windows my speakers would be disabled. Looking at Playback Devices panel (right click on the speaker icon on the Windows 7 Taskbar and select Playback Devices)  I noticed what was happening was Windows was making my HDMI monitor my default playback device. I’d go in and reselect the speakers and even make that ‘Default’ device. However, upon reboot it would revert back to HDMI. I did a batch of Windows updates and after the reboot was back to HDMI being the default playback device. However, while I was…

Adventures with HDMI, AMD & ATI

I am posting this in hopes it will save someone else from the hours of frustration and viewing countless discussion forums on how to fix this fairly simple problem. In my home office I have two separate computer systems one is an off-the-shelf HP computer which runs both Windows Vista and Linux Ubuntu. The other which is my primary was custom built at the end of last year to replace my aging Vista system. I run Windows 7 on this computer. On my primary system I have an Acer H243H 24″ Monitor which has inputs for VGA, DVI and HDMI….
