Netscape 9 Beta 1 Released

Back in February, I posted: Netscape 9 Announced. Now, four months later Netscape Navigator Beta 1 has been release. Yes, they have resurrected the Navigator name in this version. Remember, Netscape 9 is built by AOL/Time Warner (not affiliated with Mozilla) off the Mozilla Fx 2 rendering engine (Gecko 1.8). You could almost call Netscape 9 a “power user’s” version of Fx 2. Besides the standard, Session Management, Spell Check, etc. it also has many other standard features which would require extensions in Fx 2: Resizeable Textarea – allows you to make a textarea larger or smaller URL Correction –…

Mozilla had planned on having Fx 3 Alpha 5 with Places out by May 31st. Well, they missed the May 31st time line by a few days. However, when it was released on June 6th, it did include Places at least for Bookmark management. Ryan at CyberNet News has a nice screenshot here: Click For Larger Image Some other new features with the 3.0a5 release: Crash Reporting via the new Breakpad Mac OS X & Some Windows builds (not yet on Linux) New Javascript-based Password Manager More details here. Major Update Now on ‘Beta’ Channel

For those of you using Fx 1.5.0.12 and are on the Beta (update) Channel, you should be offered the major update to Fx 2.0.0.4 soon (if you haven’t already). Here is a nice screenshot compliments of Ryan at CyberNet News on what the Major Update will look like: If a user selects “Later”, they will be prompted again in approximately 24 hours. If a user selects “Never”, they are opting to skip this offer to upgrade and will not be prompted again for this particular release (2.0.0.4). If Mozilla decides to offer a 1.5.0.12 to 2.0.0.5 major upgrade, the user…

Lots has happened in the past two weeks (last Monday was Memorial Day) including some new Fx (both branches) and TBird releases. Fx 1.5.0.12 – The release of this build on Wednesday, May 30th marks the end of the security and other updates on the old Fx 1.5 branch. Now would be a good time to go to Fx 2! Major Updates – If you are currently on the ‘Beta’ update channel with Fx 1.5.0.12 you may be presented with the option to migrate over to Fx 2.0.0.4 later this week. I might try this out, but then I am…

Fx 3 User Interface (UI) Redo

One of the big changes we saw with Fx2 was the ‘visual refresh’ a major update (not so much a redesign) of the User Interface (UI).  It looks like we are going to be see big change and with this one more of a design of the UI.  Some of these changes are part of the integration of ‘Places’ bookmarking system. On Alex Faaborg’s Blog are several conceptual mock ups of Gran Paradiso’s possible new user interface.   Content handling UI replacing the old-styled dialog boxes.   Malware Detection, based on a similar Anti-Phising Protection in Fx2. Special thanks to…

From the Mozilla Developers Blog: On Wednesday, May 30, we expect to begin distributing Firefox 1.5.0.12 and Firefox 2.0.0.4 via automatic updates. Sound Fixed but New Issue

First has anyone else ran into troubles with Fx 2.0.0.3 and the upgrade Linux Kernel?  My Fx keeps crashing after a couple minutes running in the new Kernel.  I was able to reboot into the old Kernel and it works fine.  I know there has been some issues with video cards on the new Kernel but those were at boot up.  I can boot into the new Kernel but when I use Fx it becomes unresponsive after a few minutes and then will come back for may be 10-20 seconds for going unresponsive again. Now the sound issue has drove…

Sound Issues Fixed Themselves?

As a result of the Ubuntu Sound Issues as well as post on the Ubuntu Forums, I had some suggestions as to how to fix my issues.  Now this morning I booted directly into Ubuntu and the dangest thing happened, I had sound again. I also have determined that my other sound issue were being caused by as Nogg3r5 put it: “unreliable alpha software”. So far so good, I’ve been using Fx 2 along with Banshee media player all morning.  Just wish Foxy Tunes supported Banshee.  I did drop the folks at Foxy Tunes a note about this as it…
