Fx Add-ons Overhaul Pt 1

[Part 1][Part 2][Part 3][Part 3.5][Part 4][Part 4.5] The Firefox Add-ons site, particularly the extensions side is undergoing a major overhaul this weekend. “Mozilla Corp. will relaunch its popular Firefox add-on site Monday by culling the several thousand extensions listed for its open-source browser to just a couple of hundred. Rather than list all the available Firefox and Thunderbird extensions — Shaver estimated that there are approximately 2,000 available now — the site will drop marginal add-ons, as well as those no longer maintained by their creator or not updated for the browsers and e-mail clients now in use. A couple…

Not so much new features with Fx 3.0a2

With the release of Firefox 3.0a2/Gecko 1.9a2 earlier this week, there has been a common question, “So what new features come with this milestone? ” The short answer: not much. The long answer is best summed up by Percy from Mozilla Links: “The Mozilla project has released the second alpha of Gran Paradiso. Like Alpha 1 it is not much about Firefox but a testing vehicle for a large number of changes to the underlying Gecko rendering engine. Some important changes have occurred that affect the rendering of partially downloaded content (XML and web pages as well) and the calculation…

Tabs or Windows?

Over on Go Firefox!, an interesting question was posted: Which uses less system resources (memory)? My theory is using tabs would use less resources then having the same sites opened in separate windows. My reasoning is each window has to load the entire browser interface, not just the page content. So, I did a little experiment. First using Firefox 2.0.0.1 with a clean profile (no extensions, no plug-ins and default theme) and imported my bookmarks from another profile. For the first test, I opened Firefox with the clean profile and choose 5 sites and opened each one in its own…

Windows Live Hotmail

I’ve been a Windows Live Mail Beta (@live.com) user for a while now. So far it has been the best of the web based e-mail clients I have used. I’ve used Lycos, MyWay, Yahoo and even Hotmail in the past but the accounts always become bombarded with spam. Even with the spam protection enabled I still get up to 10+ spam e-mails in my Yahoo Mail INBOX on a daily basis. The only downside, since Windows Live Mail is a Microsoft product, I have to use IE Tab for the messages to display correctly. Sometime in the near future, Windows…

Blockbuster Super Bowl Commercial

Since I waiting for this DNS issue to resolve itself, I am holding off on posting any other major Firefox/Mozilla News. So, a little something different. I am one of those people who are more interested in the Super Bowl Commercials than the game itself (although this year’s was a really great game). One my favorites is the Blockbuster Commercial for Blockbuster Total Access… [youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=lamqPTAMFBg] YouTube: Blockbuster Super Bowl Commercial

Permalinks & Domain

I am in the process of getting my new domain, www.ffextensiongurublog.info setup with the blog. I have been experiencing some issues with the DNS servers tonight so the new domain may not be working for some people. Hopefully this will clear itself up shortly, but may take up to 48 hours for some of the servers to update. Once the DNS issues are resolved you should be able to access the blog using the new www.ffextensiongurublog.info address. With the new domain name setup, the address in the address bar remains static regardless of where in the blog you are. Because…

An Update on Major Update

Skimming through the notes from yesterdays Mozilla Weekly Update meeting I did notice a brief mention on the Major Update feature: “Major update still scheduled for 1-2 weeks after the release of 1.5.0.10/2.0.0.2” As it stands now the tentative release date for the 1.5.0.10/2.0.0.2 builds is February 15th. However, given the difficulties in getting this release out, chances are this will end up being pushed back. There are still two major bugs blocking these releases. The developers had hoped to have these bugs fixed by last Thursday (02/01/07) so the RC could be released later that week. Then that was…
