For those who want more screen space, Thunderbird 9 (scheduled for release on December 20th) will give you the ability on Windows to hide the Menu Bar (File, Edit, View) like you can now in Firefox. Just like in Firefox, you can press the ALT key or F10 to temporarily display the Menu Bar. To permanently restore, press ALT then go to View > Toolbars > Menu Bar. Mozilla has announced they will be moving away from using XUL (eXtensible User interface Language, an XML grammar used by Mozilla to define user interfaces for Firefox and Thunderbird) in favor of using Android’s own Native user interface. The main reasoning behind this will be to improve Firefox’s performance on Android devices, which unlike your typical desktop/laptop PC, don’t have as much memory or processing power. We are now a couple months into Mozilla’s new Rapid Release process where new versions are scheduled for release every six-weeks. As such I’ve decided to change the frequency in which the Release Recaps are posted. In a given 6-week period, 2 weekly updates contain new information, while the other 4 updates are just ‘place holder’ posts with no new information. So, effective from this point forward the Release Recaps will only be posted the Saturdays prior to and after the releases. A bit of clarification is in order in regards to the How to show the full URL in Firefox we posted earlier. The tweak which we had posted a while back is correct and will show the full URL including the http://www and the trailing ‘/’. However, the premise for this CNET article is not correct, Firefox currently and ALWAYS will show when you are on a secure connection (https) by default. There is a known issue with the HTTPS Everywhere extension causing Firefox to crash. This bug was first reported in early August when Firefox 8 was still in the nightly build stage. From what I can see it appears that only Firefox 8 (now in Beta) and newer (9 Aurora and 10 Nightly) are affected by this. It does not appear to be affecting Firefox 7 or older. With the recent releases of Thunderbird to the Daily, Earlybird and Beta channels, there are updates for both Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar (gdata-provider) add-ons. You can not at this time update via the Thunderbird add-ons manager, you will need to manually download and install the correct version for both add-ons in order to get your calendar working again in your developmental version of Thunderbird.
