After months of delays and well over a year in development, Firefox 4 is about to be released. At first glance the new interface can seem a bit over-whelming even for veteran Firefox users. So, I have put together a quick guide to Firefox 4. I am going to really focus on those changes that are going to take a little getting use to. Firefox Button – As part of an effort to…

gareon posted this article at Go Firefox! as a follow up to the article earlier this week on how IE9 does not support Windows XP. …More than 40 percent of web users are still on Windows XP. And that’s the first thing Firefox engineering director Johnathan Nightingale brought up when I asked him about the issue. In an ironic twist, Mozilla’s upcoming Firefox 4is supporting not only Microsoft’s Windows XP but also Windows 2000, even though Microsoft’s new browser doesn’t. “That’s a decision that they get to make, but it sure did surprise us, because the best metrics that we’ve…
Criminals are reportedly using a new phishing technique that allows them to bypass the fraud warnings issued by modern browsers such as Firefox and Chrome. On its blog, security firm M86Security reports that the trick involves attaching an HTML document instead of sending a link. Much to Microsoft’s dismay people are still using IE6 (released in 2001). 11%-12% of the browser market to be exact. Consider IE9 is suppose to be coming out later this year, Microsoft would really like to be done with IE6. So they have launched a site called IE6Countdown.com. The purpose of the site is to countdown the market share of IE6 until it reaches 1% (don’t expect that to be anytime soon). It also shows this market share by country. The country still using IE6 the most is China making up 35% of the usage of IE6. Source: Seattle PI:…
It only took Mozilla 5 Betas and 2 1/2 months to fully respond to the backlash of the new add-ons bar introduced in Firefox 4 Beta 7. Back when I installed Firefox 4 Beta 9, I discovered the lack of usability with the new add-ons bar which was introduced in Firefox 4 Beta 7. Mainly, it no longer displayed the status of the page loading and more importantly, it did not show link targets (address when hovering over a link). Instead link targets were shown (and not very clearly) up in the address bar. Improvements did start coming with the…
On February 10, 2010, Mozilla released Firefox 3.7 Alpha 1. Yes, that is correct version number 3.7. Since it was still being built on the Gecko 1.9 rendering engine and was supposed to be an update to Firefox 3.6 (features/changes that were not ready in time for Firefox 3.6 would be implemented into this version). So here we are a little under two-weeks from the anniversary of this release. So what happened in the past year? Let’s see the numbering (and purpose) was changed to Firefox 4 when the first Beta on the Gecko 2.0 rendering engine was released back…
Trying this out now. If nothing else I will be glad to get rid of the multiple prompts. ” Firefox only: If you’re not using Firefox’s Master Password to lock down your saved passwords, that’s a mistake. Then again, the Master Password itself could be more secure and less annoying. The Master Password+ extension fixes its subject on both those fronts… “ Jan 5, 2011 http://lifehacker.com/5725385/master-password%252B-vastly-improves-firefoxs-password-security
” Adobe Flash Player 10.1.85.3 addresses multiple vulnerabilities in the widely-installed software for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Solaris. A corresponding update for the Android version is expected by November 9 (US time). “Issues addressed by the update include multiple memory corruption vulnerabilities that could lead to code execution (including one that was specific to Windows and ActiveX), a denial of service vulnerability with potential for arbitrary code execution, an input validation vulnerability that could lead to a bypass of cross-domain policy file restrictions, a library-loading vulnerability with potential code execution, and an information disclosure vulnerability that was specific to Safari…
The other day I had a customer who’s site would not load in Internet Explorer. It would load in Firefox, but Internet Explorer would just choke and given an usual error saying it could not load the site. At first I thought may be it was a time-out issue as I could not duplicate on our internal network. Then the customer told me they tried to load their site at their local library and with Internet Explorer with the same results. I took a look at the site on the computer we have that is not connected to our internal…
The big news this week is after six months of searching, Gary Kovacs, former general manager and vice president of mobile and devices at Adobe, and employee of IBM for ten years, has been appointed as the next Mozilla Corp. CEO. Mozilla Corp. former CEO John Lilly explained why Kovacs was the most ideal replacement: We’ve talked with many people through this process — most of them were exceptionally talented in many ways. But Gary’s a special person for the CEO role, and here’s why: He’s a veteran of the Web and rich media — he’s been at the center…
