One of the nice features with Firefox is allowing you to add multiple search engines to your search bar. Since the introduction of this feature, more and more sites have added this functionality. As a result some users are bound to have a lot of search engines in their list. This is good and bad. Good in that you have plenty of search engines to choose from when you want to search; bad if you have so many search engines your drop down practically goes off the screen and you have to hunt down the search engine you wanted to…

With the recent announcement from AOL that they will end support for Netscape in February, many loyal Netscape users will be looking for a new browser. Since Netscape 9 is based off of Firefox 2 with a few extensions built-in, it would seem moving to Firefox 2 would be the logical choice. However once users Get Firefox, they are going to discover that the social networking features that came with Netscape 9 are not included. While it is not too difficult to get these features installed in Firefox 2, locating them on addons.mozilla.org (AMO) isn’t as easy. The Guru has…
December, for the most part was a rather uneventful month (other than the Blog Year In Review). The only big news was the (premature) release of Firefox 3.0 Beta 2 about a week before Christmas. I still say the developers should have held out until after the holidays. The Guru did review a couple add-ons, Locator and a really cool and revolutionary ‘theme’ extension called Personas. While on the subject of add-ons did you know both Firefox and Thunderbird have a ‘hidden’ feature that adds an ‘install button’ to the add-ons manager? You ask, and you shall receive. The Guru,…
Wrapping up 2007, I came across some very surprsing and some what disappointing news. As of February 1, 2008, AOL will stop providing ANY support for Netscape. It was only back in February when AOL announced Netscape 9 based off of Firefox 2. It was finally released in October of this year. Here are the details from the Netscape Blog: While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser…
In November, Mozilla had a record 5 Firefox/Thunderbird releases: Firefox 3.0 Beta 1 is the “most thoroughly tested beta [they’ve] ever shipped”, but it is not for the faint-of-heart. Those who were brave enough to try out the first beta quickly learned about the poor extension compatibility. Many extensions, especially those pertaining to bookmarks, will probably not function to their full potential if at all . Still a lot more work for the developers before the finished Firefox 3 product can be released. Firefox 2.0.0.9 fixed regressions from the 2.0.0.8 release the prior month Firefox 2.0.0.10 a planned security update…
October 2007 was a very interesting, almost depressing (in terms of Thunderbird news) and chaotic month. After nearly 5-years The Guru’s Windows XP system quits unexpectedly. A few hours later The Guru was slowly up and running again on a new Windows Vista PC. While I did start off with a fresh Firefox profile, I was able to move my Thunderbird profile over from the old system. About a week later I came across the Blip.tv Vista Video: Vista Sucks. Of course The Guru had to weigh in with his thoughts about the video. While on the subject of Windows,…
September was big month for news from Mozilla: In the early part of September Firefox tallied up 400 Million Downloads Another big news item from Mozilla brought a collective sigh-of-relief from Thunderbird Users. A new and improved Firefox ‘First Run’ Page was launched in order to ‘increase user retention’. A major QuickTime Vulnerability was discovered in the current Firefox 2.0.0.6 version, prompting the release of Fx 2.0.0.7 in mid-September. Yet another (but much needed) feature was announced for the forthcoming Firefox 3, the ability to Download Across Sessions. ‘I can’t believe it is not in Beta Yet!’, Firefox 3.0m8 (Alpha…

Ever since the issues with Yahoo!Maps and the Firefox nightly builds, I’ve been using Google Maps. But there a few steps involved when wanting to look-up an address you find on a website. First you must highlight and copy the address, then open a new tab and go to Goggle Maps and then finally paste in the address you wish to look-up. Once installed, the Locator extension adds a new option to the context (right-click) menu, locate on Google Map. So all you have to do now is a highlight the address, right-click, select this option and a new window…
