Why Firefox 4 isn’t abandoning Windows XP

gareon posted this article at Go Firefox! as a follow up to the article earlier this week on how IE9 does not support Windows XP. …More than 40 percent of web users are still on Windows XP. And that’s the first thing Firefox engineering director Johnathan Nightingale brought up when I asked him about the issue. In an ironic twist, Mozilla’s upcoming Firefox 4is supporting not only Microsoft’s Windows XP but also Windows 2000, even though Microsoft’s new browser doesn’t. “That’s a decision that they get to make, but it sure did surprise us, because the best metrics that we’ve…

Firefox 4 Will Support Windows XP

Unlike Microsoft’s latest release of Internet Exploiter Explorer (IE9). Via The Microsoft Blog/Seattle PI: You can download it here, but only if you’re using Windows 7 or Vista. Windows XP users aren’t invited to this party. IE9 won’t work on that nearly decade-old operating system. By not creating a version for XP, Microsoft is preventing a large majority of users from downloading and installing the latest browser. According to Net Applications’ data from February, Windows XP was used on 55 percent of the Windows machines that access the Web. That’s a huge number of computers that simply can’t run IE9….

Oddities with 64-Bit Firefox 4 Part 3

Okay this has been fixed now. I can now see the fonts correctly in the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox 4. An oddity though is under the suggestion of Claus I did run Firefox 4 32-bit in safe mode and the page rendered fine. Now safe mode is suppose to disable all add-ons as well as bypass any custom configuration settings via userChrome.css and userContent.css (not that there were any on this particular profile) and the page loaded fine. So thinking it was a bad extension or plug-in, I started disabling them 1-by-1. With all the extensions and plug-ins…

IE9 Coming March 14th, Fx 4 to follow…

…about a month later. Well, that is a guess given Mozilla is making plans for a worldwide Firefox 4 Launch Party on April 15th. While Mozilla hasn’t nailed down an official release date yet for Firefox 4, Microsoft announced today IE9 is being released next Monday, March 14th.

IE6 Still Kicking

Much to Microsoft’s dismay people are still using IE6 (released in 2001). 11%-12% of the browser market to be exact. Consider IE9 is suppose to be coming out later this year, Microsoft would really like to be done with IE6. So they have launched a site called IE6Countdown.com. The purpose of the site is to countdown the market share of IE6 until it reaches 1% (don’t expect that to be anytime soon). It also shows this market share by country. The country still using IE6 the most is China making up 35% of the usage of IE6. Source: Seattle PI:…

7capture

Since the upcoming releases of Firefox 3.5, 3.6 and 4.0 are stalled at the moment, going to take this time to review some of the free software I’ve been using. First up is 7capture. As the name implies it is a screen capture application and works with Windows XP, Vista as well as 7.  I was a big fan of FastStone Capture, but back in 2007 the newer versions were no longer free. Further when I tried to install it on my Windows 7 system, it did not work. So I started looking around for a new screen capture application….

Firefox 3.7a1 Released 1-Year Ago

Well sort of. Back then it was being called “Mozilla Developers Preview (1.9.3 alpha)”.  The odd naming was due to this being a preview of the new Gecko 1.9.3 rendering engine and what likely would have become Firefox 3.7 (Firefox 3.6 runs on Gecko 1.9.2.x) .  There were a total of five Alpha releases between February and June 2010. Then it was decided to scrap Firefox 3.7 as well as Gecko 1.9.3 and move everything on to Gecko 2.0 and then also start labeling the releases as Firefox 4 Beta in July 2010. So, here we are 1-year later and…

Firefox 4 Beta Updates

I really don’t think Mozilla is going to get Firefox 4 out this month. While checking the release schedule for this weekend’s Release Recap I noticed two things. First, no official date listed for Beta 11 and second added to the list is Firefox Beta 12. Update: According to PCMag.com, Beta 11 is done but may not be released until early next week. While Beta 12 is suppose to address some issues including those related to Flash and Hotmail.

Firefox 4 Beta 11 and Firefox 5

On February 10, 2010, Mozilla released Firefox 3.7 Alpha 1. Yes, that is correct version number 3.7. Since it was still being built on the Gecko 1.9 rendering engine and was supposed to be an update to Firefox 3.6 (features/changes that were not ready in time for Firefox 3.6 would be implemented into this version). So here we are a little under two-weeks from the anniversary of this release. So what happened in the past year? Let’s see the numbering (and purpose) was changed to Firefox 4 when the first Beta on the Gecko 2.0 rendering engine was released back…
