Thunderbird
Back in October things were looking very gloomy for Thunderbird. It was a bit of a double-whammy when Scott McGregor, Thunderbird lead engineer and David Bienvenu, developer announced they were leaving Mozilla. These announcements came about a month after, then CEO Mitchel Baker announced the split-off to Thunderbird Mail Corporation (MailCo, now known as Mozilla Messaging). Finally, some good news to report about Thunderbird. In his blog entry, Progress Update, David Ascher has announced Mark Banner (Standard8 on IRC) has signed on as a full-time on Thunderbird (effective next month). One of the projects that Mark will finally have time…
I stumbled upon a link to the In-progress Releases page on the MozillaWiki via David Ascher. Over the next 30 days expect to see new releases for Fx 2, Fx 3 and Thunderbird 2: Firefox 2.0.0.13 is scheduled for release on or around March 25th. This has already been confirmed in the last Weekly Update meeting on March 10th. I also noticed this past Friday my Fx 2 nightly builds had been bumped up to Fx 2.0.0.14pre. Fx 2.0.0.13 should be released to the Beta Channel later this week. Firefox 3.0b5 is scheduled for release on or around March 27th….

…what is planned and what should be included I am looking over the freshly updated Thunderbird 3 Status Meeting notes from Tuesday’s (March 4th) meeting this evening. Direct calendar integration, instead of the external Sunbird Application or Lighting Extensions seems the big ‘must-have’ feature for TBird 3. Honestly, this is not on the top of my list of features. I have and continue to us Yahoo’s Calendar (FYI the Guru is not a big fan of Google). It is simple and is part of my Yahoo! Start Page. But also because I just use TBird just to manage my e-mail….
Starting today, there will be a Thunderbird Status Meeting every Tuesday at 9:30 AM Pacific (12:30 PM Eastern). This week’s meeting is going to cover getting ready to go to Alpha 1 on Thunderbird 3 as well as calendar integration and which extensions should be come standard features. The complete (or at this time incomplete) notes of today’s meeting can be found here. Source: David Ascher
As mentioned in the Weekly Update 2008-02-25, Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 is suppose to be released today. So in theory, when this post goes live Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 should have already been released by Mozilla. Users will be prompted for an automatic update within the next 72 hours. Those wishing to upgrade now can do so via the Help Menu, Check For Updates option or by downloading the latest release at getthunderbird.com. Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 contains many security fixes and the full details can be found in the Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 Release Notes.
Reminder: Due to the scheduled meeting time and my work schedule, I am not be able to get the meeting notes posted until the following Tuesday. Here’s an overview of this week’s Update Meeting: Fx 2.0.0.13 Purposed Release Schedule: Code freeze: March 7 Builds start: March 10 QA starts: March 11 Release to beta channel: March 18 Final Release: March 25 Firefox 3 Beta 4 12 P1 blockers, ~70 P2 blockers remaining for Fx3 Fixes coming soon for: All P1s seem to be on track Save As… name suggestions (bug 299732) Auto-hide for toolbars in full screen mode (bug 240859)…
Back in July 2007, Mitchell Baker, then Mozilla Corporation’s CEO, announced a major change with Thunderbird’s Future. Now, nearly 7 months later, David Ascher has announced the official creation of Mozilla Messaging (has unofficially been called MailCo for the past few months). This is a new subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation, focused on email and internet communications. David explains the purpose and the goals of the new subsidiary, including future plans for Thunderbird 3: integrated calendaring (building on the great work done by the Mozilla Calendar team and their Lightning add-on to Thunderbird) better search facilities easier configuration and a…
In preparation for the upcoming Firefox 3, Addons.Mozilla.Org (AMO) is being redesigned and updated. The biggest change is a new ‘visual refresh’ and redesign of the layout. Below is a preview of the new AMO design via Mozilla Links: By default when you arrive at AMO it is setup to search for Firefox extensions. At the top right is an Other Applications button/menu which will allow you to choose from Thunderbird, SeaMonkey (former Mozilla Suite) and Sunbird (Mozilla’s calendar project). This simple integrating of these options into a single drop-down menu really makes a for cleaner look. Unlike the present…
