Note: The below directions apply to Firefox 2 or older. More updated directions canbe found at The Firefox Extension Guru’s Wiki. Here is a neat little trick to open the Add-Ons and Download Managers into the sidebar instead of a new window: From the Bookmarks Menu, select Organize Bookmarks Click the New Bookmark Button In Name field enter what you want to call this bookmark (Add-Ons or Downloads) In the Location field copy/paste the appropriate address below: Add-Ons: chrome://mozapps/content/extensions/extensions.xul Downloads: chrome://mozapps/content/downloads/downloads.xul Check the box: Load this bookmark in sidebar Click OK To make it even easier to access the Add-Ons…
Some folks have asked what happened to the “Get Mail” button that use to be in the older Firefox 1.5.0.X builds. For reasons not really clearly stated the developers opted to remove the button in Firefox 2. However, with the Get Mail extension, you can have the icon back. The extension works with Firefox 2.0 and newer. One word of warning this extension may not display correctly if you are not using the default Firefox theme. If this is the case you may want to inform the theme offer and see if they can provide icon support. 06/21/07: Link has…
Earlier this week the next Thunderbird 2 milestone, Beta 2 was released. We are getting closer to the final release of Thunderbird 2. According to the Roadmap, the estimated release is first quarter 2007. Given how late into January we are and also that there will still be a couple release candidates, I am going to guesstimate the final release sometime in March. New features with Thunderbird 2: Visual Refresh (new look) Improved Message Notification Message Tags Folder Summary Popups* Tabbed Message* * Still in development News Source: mozillaZine Permalink
Yet another new release (v 0.3.1) of the SearchLoad Extension. A couple minor changes but nice fixes though. The main change/fix is on the options screen, in Searchbar section there is no longer a 99 second maximum limit before the search bar is cleared and/or the search engine is reset back to the default. You can now specify however much (or little) time you want before these actions happen. The other change was on the tabs section, Keep blank tab has been renamed the Detect blank tab. I still cain’t get this feature to work right, as in theory if…
Naturally, after I reviewed the SearchLoad Extension a new version (0.3) is released. However the functionality of the extension has not changed, just the options. Prior to version 0.3 the extension added Search Options to the Tools menu. With version 0.3, this has been removed and a search tab has been added the main options panel (Tools, Options…).

An Interview with Window Snyder Window Snyder was a senior security strategist at Microsoft before leaving in 2005 to become a founder and CTO of Matasano Security LLC. Last September she became Mozilla Corp.’s security chief and is now responsible for locking down the popular Firefox browser and other programs. In this Q&A, Snyder credits Microsoft for working hard at a faster and more accurate patching process and admits that, sometimes, even Mozilla has to pull back on security updates at the 11th hour. But she says Mozilla will always be a step ahead because a huge open source community…
Once I was able to get the Splash options window working I made a visit to Mr Tech’s Firefox Splash Screens site and found a Splash Screen I liked. I also took a couple minutes (literally) to get and install the free FastStone Capture software thanks to an excellent recommendation from Ryan at CyberNet News. The quality is outstanding compared to the conventional Windows screen capture plus it allows me to save the files in PNG format. There are lot of other features with FastStone I have yet to try out. So with the FastStone Capture software I was able…
The standard About Firefox screen is pretty boring looking. It is even worse for those of us using the Bon Echo or Minefield nightlies since it uses a globe without the firefox as the image (Minefield’s globe has a stick of dynamite stuck in it). However, you can tweak your About Screen by changing the image, the color and font of the text as well as the size of the window. Here is my new & improved About Screen: Note: For this tweak I recommend using the ChromEdit Plus extension. Simply add and modify these lines to your userChrome.css file…
Some quick updates regarding A Splash Screen For Fx & TBird. First, the extension (here) also works with Flock, sort of. You will get an Incompatible Extension Warning. Just click ‘Yes’ and the extension will install. Further there is an options screen which is accessed from Tools, Add-ons (or Extensions), select Splash and then click Options. Note: If you are having trouble with the Options Window “rolling-up” this can be fixed via about:config by changing browser.preferences.animateFadeIn to False. With the options screen you can specify the image you want displayed, background text, size of splash screen, how long it is…
