Which will come first?

The Internet Explorer blog recently announced, IE7 will be released sometime this month. Mozilla still plans on releasing Firefox 2.0 on October 24th. A minor detail though, while IE7 will be ‘released’ later this month those who are subscribe to the Windows Updates likely won’t see an update offer until sometime in November. The October release will be for people who download and install the application directly from Microsoft’s website. Firefox 2.0, should be accessible via automatic update shortly after its release. Mozilla to deliver Ligthning functionality to OpenOffice.org

I am really excited to see Mozilla partnering with Sun Microsystems to add Mozilla’s Lighting functionality in the future to OpenOffice.org (OOo). For those not familiar with Mozilla Lighting, it is a Thunderbird extension which adds the currently missing calendar and scheduler features to Thunderbird. This is going to give OOo an edge over Microsoft as presently OOo does not have scheduling/calendar functionality. Update: YouTube by Google?

Earlier I had reported a possible e-mail rumor about Google in talks of acquiring YouTube. There has been a lot of talk about this from Wall Street Journal to many of the major tech blogs. So, this may be not just be a rumor after all. According to the Yahoo! article: Report: Google in talks to buy YouTube, “Representatives from Google and YouTube did not immediately return calls to The Associated Press.” It would seem to me if this were just a mere ‘rumor’ the AP would have heard back from one these two companies, even if it is just…

Firefox/Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 Due Out Later

The final releases in the Firefox & Thunderbird 1.5.0.X builds series will be released sometime after Firefox 2.0 which as of today is still October 24th.  Mozilla though is encouraging folks to move over the 2.0 build series since like the 1.0.X build series, there will no longer be any more updates on the 1.5.0.X build series after this release. There are many great features (click links for related articles) in both Firefox 2.0 as well as Thunderbird 2.0 that they are worth upgrading to.  The Firefox 2.0 download is a little larger at 7MB compared to 5MB for 1.0.8…

Minefield (Firefox 3.0a1)

In response to my recent Browser Smörgåsbord entry, some folks have asked for a link to get Minefield (Firefox 3.0a1). It took some hunting on the Mozilla FTP server but here is the link to folder with the latest nightly of Minefield: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/ Please keep in mind Minefield is still in early development and may not be very stable (this may have improved since the previous nightly I had was from sometime in August).
