With Thunderbird 5 due out later today, users are going to find many of their add-ons may not work. Some add-on developers may be caught off-guard by the recent progress of Thunderbird 3.3/5.0 development and were not anticipating Thunderbird 5 to be release so soon. We are seeing a lot of this on the Firefox side with the release of Firefox 5 last week. However, unlike Firefox 4 and Firefox 5, add-ons that are working in Thunderbird 3.1 may not work in Thunderbird 5. The move from Thunderbird 3.1 to Thunderbird 5 would be like going from Firefox 3.6 to…

Here’s an updated on the Broken Thunderbird on Linux Mint post from last week. Haven’t heard anything new in the Thunderbird Builds Forum and the one person I know who runs Linux Mint doesn’t use Thunderbird. So I’ve decided the time has come to file a bug on this issue. I am the proud creator of Bug 667720
A Public Service Announcement from the Guru. I am not just talking about Firefox, but more importantly your browser plugins (Flash, JAVA, QuickTime, etc) and yes even those Windows Updates too. The below two articles are from a colleague’s blog Grand Stream Dreams and describes what happens when users continue to use out-dated browsers with out-dated plug-ins. A good lesson here too is don’t be fooled by those security alert warnings advertisements aka scareware. Some folks may find these posts a bit technical, but they do show the amount of the time and work that is involved in fixing an…
Thunderbird 5 will include the Troubleshooting Information panel (Help > Troubleshooting Information) that was introduced in Firefox 3.6. This panel features a button to open your Profile Folder.
I really not sure what I did to get this to work. I had done a fresh install in another folder and had it working there, but a lot of the customizations were missing. I started poking around in the original folder trying to see if I could figure out what was wrong. Why was I getting a PHP White Screen of Death when attempting to access the gallery? Even looked at my servers error logs, which didn’t really tell me a whole lot. I somehow figured out that it seemed to be choking on the admin.php file. So I…
El Guru’s Gallery is currently offline. I am attempting to fix an issue that was caused by updating the core gallery software. The gallery should be working again sometime on Monday, June 27th. I will post an update once I have this fixed.
A couple years ago I was shadowing another department at my job. The person who I was shadowing that day, taught me about creating bookmark shortcuts using Keywords in Firefox. Of all the things that I learned that day, this had to be the most useful. This works for any version of Firefox and with sites which have a search function and displays the search string in the URL. For this article, I will use Mozilla’s Bugzilla site as I go there quite frequently to look-up Firefox and Thunderbird bugs. There are many cases in the Firefox and Thunderbird Build…
At least not for a while and very likely not in 2011. Firefox 8 is going to be the next trunk (nightly) builds starting July 5th and there is currently no expectation that 64-Bit Windows support is going to part of Firefox 8. For those interested in what is going on behind the scenes, you can follow these tracking bugs: Bug 471090 Bug 558448 One of the main issues is currently the developmental builds for Windows 64-Bit Firefox only support 64-Bit plugins. Because not all Windows plugins provide a 64-bit version, 32-bit versions would also need to be loaded. See…
